If it is not spent amidst radiant-browed beauties, how then could this life pass, and where?
If life is not spent amidst radiant-faced beauties, then how could it ever be lived, and where would it be spent?
2
The moments that once passed between your cheek and tress, / Return at times to strike the soul with mortal distress.
The moments that were spent in the closeness of your cheeks and hair sometimes become a deadly torment to life.
3
For years I lived with this anxious dread, lest the daring of my desire should weigh too heavily upon your innocent heart.
For a long time, I lived with the anxious apprehension that the boldness of my love and desire might weigh heavily upon your innocent heart.
4
Every station of love was utterly enchanting, yet we, the devotees of love, passed through dragged along in torment.
Although every stage of love was extremely charming, we, the lovers, passed through it dragged along in distress.
5
Even the arduous trials of madness, in the solace of your memory, / Appeared exquisitely fair, and passed by with the vibrant bloom of youth.
Accompanied by your memory, even the hardest stages of madness in love appeared beautiful and passed by feeling vibrant and youthful.
6
As an offering to the quest for you, before my eyes, not merely this single universe, but hundreds of worlds have passed by.
In the quest to seek you, not only this single universe, but hundreds of worlds have passed before my eyes.
7
Amidst the throng of radiant splendors, how wondrous is longing's flight—as if a soul were gliding amidst the stars.
How wondrous is the flight of longing amidst a multitude of splendors, as though a soul were passing through the midst of the stars.
8
Forgive my fault—made mistrustful by this world, what doubts crossed my mind even of your fidelity!
Forgive my mistake; having grown distrustful of the world, I ended up harboring all sorts of doubts even about your loyalty.
9
I was lamenting the sorrow of separation when suddenly I felt / that passing so close beside me, all at once, they had drifted by.
I was still lamenting the sorrow of separation when I suddenly felt that they had unexpectedly passed right by me.
10
Along the path of faithfulness, there came a stage so fraught, that we grew deeply doubtful even of our own heart.
On the path of loyalty, there came a point where we grew doubtful and suspicious even of ourselves.
11
That era of love and desire, imbued with true sincerity, has never passed in vain, nor shall it ever pass in vain.
That phase of love and desire which is filled with true sincerity has neither ever gone in vain in the past, nor will it ever be wasted in the future.
12
They call it paradise, and they name it hell as well—that life which is spent amidst the company of the fair.
That life which is spent among the beautiful is called paradise, and that very same life is called hell as well.
13
Even nature's most enchanting and loveliest vistas, / I know not why, weighed so heavy on my heart today.
I do not know why even the most captivating scenes of nature felt so heavy and burdensome on my heart today.
14
Before my eyes have passed such nests as well, at whose mere shadow even lightnings used to tremble.
I have seen such nests as well, at whose mere shadow even lightning used to tremble.
15
My duty is merely to tend the garden of this world; what care I whether spring arrives or autumn passes by?
My duty is only to tend and nurture the garden of the world; it matters nothing to me whether spring arrives or autumn passes by.
16
What manner of beauty was that, of which Love itself remained unaware? Along the path of yearning, through such trials too did we fare.
What kind of beauty was that of which even love itself remained unaware; on the path of seeking, such trials were also endured.
17
Ask not of the garden laid waste in the very flush of spring; may God grant that never again does such a sight pass before my eyes.
Do not ask about how the garden was devastated in the fullness of spring; may God grant that such a scene never passes before my eyes again.
18
Such were the secret affairs that passed between our souls, which none could ever witness, save for the hearts alone.
There were also some such matters that passed between us which none could witness except the hearts themselves.
19
At times, around this very handful of dust, all seven heavens have passed in holy circumambulation.
At times, all seven heavens have revolved in circumambulation around this very handful of dust.
20
Though the company of roses is enchanting indeed, true life is that which is lived amidst the thorns.
Although the company of flowers may be very beautiful, true life is that which is spent amidst thorns.
21
Already you find them so hard to endure, dear friend— Those trials that till now have merely swept swiftly past.
O friend, you already find those misfortunes so unbearable, even though until now they have only passed by swiftly.
22
jinheñ ki dīda-e-shā.ir hī dekh saktā hai vo inqilāb tire sāmne kahāñ guzre
23
bahut aziiz hai mujh ko unheñ kyā yaad 'jigar' vo hādsāt-e-mohabbat jo nā-gahāñ guzre
