Now they say to me, 'Relent, and listen to my plea!' / O Allah, to the wonders of Your glory, a sacrifice I would be!
Now they themselves are asking me to listen to their plea; O Allah, I marvel and offer myself in awe of Your glory.
2
Learn to discern this ruffled temper and relent; yield not so easily if you must, but yet consent.

3
Whom is there to fear, who is there to bar the way? / Why not go every day—go as a guest, I say!
Whom is there to fear, and who is there to stop you? Why shouldn't one go every day, visiting as a guest?
4
Who in this gathering has hidden you within their heart? Amidst so many faces, discern who the thief is.
Someone in this gathering has hidden you inside their heart; try to identify who among all these people is that thief.
5
A furrow marks your brow, your eyes are turned away; such an arrival steals one's wits—pray, just leave and go your way!
Your brow is furrowed with displeasure and your gaze is turned away; coming like this makes one lose their wits, so please just leave.
6
Two hardships bar the way when I express this deep desire: first, you must come to know its truth, and then, at last, consent.
There are two difficulties in expressing one's desire or love: first, that you come to know and understand it, and second, that you accept and agree to it.
7
What pleasure can man ever find in this house of existence? Arrive as an honored guest, only to depart filled with regret.
What pleasure is there for a human in this house of existence? One arrives here like a guest, only to depart full of regret.
8
Though the promise of union be false, what sheer delight it brings; why should one not sacrifice one's soul for such an exquisite lie?
Even if the promise of union is false, it still brings pleasure; why should one not sacrifice oneself for such a lie?
9
Let a sweet longing linger on, even after our union has passed; fulfill some desires, withhold a few, before you leave at last.
Let a longing to meet linger on even after our union; therefore, as you depart, fulfill only some desires and leave some unfulfilled.
10
A fine suggestion, that I walk you to the rival's door! I am no guardian of yours—go on then, take your leave.
What a fine thing to ask, that I accompany you to the rival's house. I am not your guardian or caretaker, so go by yourself.
11
Fresh from the rival's door, you pause here on your feet; go bestow this favor on someone else—take your leave, depart.
You have come straight from the rival's house and are just pausing here on your feet; go show this favor to someone else and please leave.
12
Put to the test of faithful love by both, I thus replied: either persuade the rival now, or yield and be reconciled.
When tested for loyalty by both, I simply said: either convince the rival or give in and agree yourself.
13
What deep mistrust she harbors! I have been strictly commanded: / Do not go, not even as a guest, into the very house of God.
They harbor such deep suspicion against me that I am forbidden from visiting even the house of God as a guest.
14
Is it ordained that you must agree to all that I convey? Hear everything: reject a few, but let a few hold sway.
Is it obligatory that you must accept everything I say? Listen to everything; reject some of it, but at least accept some.
15
Let those maddened by her locks show some swagger and flair; if you must enter Paradise, go with disheveled hair.
Those madly in love with the beloved's tresses should have some distinctive style or flair; even if one enters Paradise, one should go with disheveled hair.
16
If ever you behold my heart, say to it with tender love: / 'May I be sacrificed for you, forever sacrificed for you!'
If you happen to see my heart, then lovingly say only this to it: 'May I be sacrificed for you, truly sacrificed for you!'
17
Should you ever look upon this heart, say with tender grace anew: I would sacrifice my soul for you, forever surrender all to you.
If you happen to see the state of my heart, then just say with love: may I be sacrificed for you, may I give up everything for you.
18
I shall not let you leave without a verdict passed; examine now this lawsuit of the heart, and settle it at last.
I will not let you leave without a decision being made; examine and settle this lawsuit of the heart right now.
19
True enough, what concern have you with the world's strife? / Yet at least acknowledge the one who is losing his life.
It is true that you have no concern with the world, but at least acknowledge the one who is losing their life.
20
Lest in your wrath this keepsake slip from your hand, gather my torn collar into your hem as you leave.
Lest this keepsake slip from your hand in anger, take my torn collar gathered in the hem of your garment as you leave.
21
To my plea for union, came this brief reply: / The heart will not consent that with yours I comply.
Upon my plea for union, I received only this brief reply: my heart does not agree to consent to your wish.
22
He may not be a holy saint, yet he is worldly-wise; whatever counsel 'Dagh' imparts, believe it and comply.
Even if Dagh is not a saint or holy man, he is certainly an experienced person; therefore, whatever advice he gives, one should accept it.
