Ghazal

Altaf Hussain Hali· Ghazal· 13 shers· radif: की

This ghazal poignantly reflects the vulnerability of a lover whose reputation for piety is undone by deep affection. It expresses a delicate fear of growing intimacy, knowing that the inevitable pain of eventual separation will be unbearable.

1
Famed far and wide was the renown of my piety; and yet, look with whom I chose to fall in love!
There was great renown everywhere of my piety and virtue, and yet look at the person with whom I ended up falling in love.
2
Why deepen this intimacy so much? / I do not have the strength to bear separation.
Why do you increase this closeness and intimacy so much? I do not possess the strength to bear the sorrow of separation.
3
How long can you hide your face from me? / When revealing yourself is second nature to you.
How long will you keep hiding your face from me, considering you have a habit of displaying yourself?
4
In feigned hostility dwell words of fond affection, / And in each truce lies the tease of a quarrel.
of affection are hidden within apparent hostility, and even in moments of peace lies the teasing provocation of another fight.
5
Go on, consort with rivals if you must, but speak with me, at least, in candid truth.
If you associate with strangers or rivals, go ahead and do so, but at least speak with me with honesty and clarity.
6
The heart remained captive in the snare of love; in vain was every longing to be free.

7
Even if the heart were still within the breast, from whom here / Could one ever hold the hope of heart-stealing grace?
Even if the heart were still present in one's chest, from whom here could one ever hope for love or heart-winning charm?
8
From city and river, from garden and desert bare / No scent of kinship rises anywhere.
No scent of familiarity or friendship comes from anywhere—neither from the city and the river, nor from the garden and the desert.
9
No plunderer of faith ever crossed my way; and so the honor of my piety was saved.
No one who could ruin or plunder my faith ever crossed my path, and so the dignity of my piety was preserved.
10
O fortune of this mad lover's shared tale, in the end, you only fell short of the mark.
Addressing the fortune of his shared tale of love, the poet laments that in the end, it proved deficient and failed to reach fulfillment.
11
O fleeting companionship born of envy, / Even you have broken faith with me.
O occasional companionship of Rashki, even you have proven unfaithful to us.
12
The separation that we dreaded just like death / The fateful hour of it has now arrived.
The moment of that separation which we feared just like death has finally arrived.
13
To still crave wandering alive, O Hali / Is surely the ultimate height of shamelessness.
O Hali, to still harbor the craving to wander around alive is the absolute limit of shamelessness.
