The lofty-minded are forever consumed by the urge to rise; yet it is we who brought down these poetic grounds from the skies.
High-minded people are always concerned with rising and making progress, whereas we have brought down these poetic grounds from the skies.

Why should they not send blessings upon beholding the fair? The pure of sight perceive the Maker's craft reflected there.
Why should those with pure sight not send blessings upon seeing beautiful people, when they behold the Creator's craftsmanship in them?

The zenith of renunciation befits the pure of sight; for us who sit on humble mats, this very dust is a throne.
The perfection of asceticism befits those who possess pure sight, and for humble mat-dwellers like us, this very dust is a throne.
4
Leaving their royal chambers, they sleep within the tomb; From where to where has destiny borne dwellers to the gloom!
Leaving behind royal palaces, people now sleep in the grave; death has transported the inhabitants from such heights to such depths.
5
These are not wrinkles on my hands; the frailty of old age has merely gathered the sleeves of my original robe into pleats.
These are not wrinkles on my hands; rather, the weakness of old age has gathered the sleeves of my original robe into pleats.
6
Once again I pile high the granary of novel themes; go send word to the gleaners of my harvest floor.
I am once again gathering heaps of new themes and ideas; inform those who glean leftovers from my harvest.
7
What profit lies in futile toil over those grounds, from which the masters have already reaped their yield?
What is the use of worrying or toiling in vain over those lands, from which the landowners have already reaped their yield?
8
Today, they cannot find even a place to sit and rest / Those who, but yesterday, granted vast lands at their behest.
Today, the very people who used to grant lands to others cannot even find a place to sit.
9
Such exalted glory was granted unto the pilgrims, or else whence would angels have the fortune to kiss mortal brows?
This exalted honor was granted only to the pilgrims; otherwise, how would angels ever have the good fortune to kiss mortal foreheads?
10
Adorned with fresh blossoms of poetic thought, we have breathed life back into these desolate grounds.
We have adorned these barren grounds (or poetic meters) with fresh blossoms of new themes, thereby bringing them back to life.
11
Let us see if even a grave will be my lot in these grounds, which I have gained only after sifting through the dust.
It remains to be seen whether I will even be destined to have a grave in these lands that I obtained only after searching tirelessly and sifting through the dust.
12
Failing strength, whitening hair, and fading sight—through these alone does mortal man discern the signs of death.
The decline of physical strength, greying hair, and fading eyesight—it is through these very signs that mortal humans recognize the indicators of approaching death.

Those who have buried treasures in the earth and guard them do not realize that they too will eventually turn to dust.
14
Have they no inkling of that firm, unyielding reckoning, those who set about usurping the lands of another?
Do those who have begun unlawfully seizing the lands of others have no awareness of that firm arrangement or reckoning awaiting them?

Those who have departed from this world are never found again; from where shall we now seek and bring back our companions?
The people who depart from this world are never found again; from where can we now search and bring back our companions?

That darkness and loneliness constantly revolve before the eyes; for those who look toward the final outcome, the dust of the grave serves as kohl for their vision.
