नुमूद ओ बूद को आक़िल हबाब समझे हैं वो जागते हैं जो दुनिया को ख़्वाब समझे हैं
The wise regard existence as a fleeting bubble's gleam; only they are truly awake who see this world as a dream.

कभी बुरा नहीं जाना किसी को अपने सिवा हर एक ज़र्रे को हम आफ़्ताब समझे हैं
Save for myself, I never thought ill of anyone; in every single speck of dust, I saw a radiant sun.
I have never considered anyone bad except myself; I have looked upon every tiny speck of dust as a radiant sun.

अजब नहीं है जो शीशों में भर के ले जाएँ इन आँसुओं को फ़रिश्ते गुलाब समझे हैं
It would be no wonder if they fill their phials and carry them away; the angels have mistaken these tears for rosewater.
It would not be surprising if the angels fill their bottles with these tears and take them away, as they have mistaken them for rosewater.

ज़माना एक तरह पर कभी नहीं रहता इसी को अहल-ए-जहाँ इंक़िलाब समझे हैं
The world never abides in one unchanging state; this alone the people of the world mistake for revolution.
The world never remains in one constant state, and the people of this world have mistaken this perpetual change for a revolution.

उन्हीं को दार-ए-बक़ा की है पुख़्तगी का ख़याल जो बे-सबाती-ए-दहर-ए-ख़राब समझे हैं
Only they conceive the permanence of the eternal abode, who have understood the transience of this ruined world.
Only those who have realized the impermanence of this ruined world can truly comprehend the permanence of the eternal realm.

शबाब खो के भी ग़फ़लत वही है पीरों को सहर की नींद को भी शब का ख़्वाब समझे हैं
Though youth is lost, the elders linger in that same heedless trance; the slumber of the breaking dawn they take for the dream of night.
Even after losing their youth, the elderly still remain in the same state of negligence; they continue to mistake the sleep of dawn for the dreams of the night.

लहद में आएँ नकीरैन आएँ बिस्मिल्लाह हर इक सवाल का हम भी जवाब समझे हैं
Let the questioning angels enter the grave—welcome, in God's name! To every question they bring, we too have an answer prepared.
Let the questioning angels enter the grave, they are welcome; we too understand and are prepared with an answer to each of their questions.

अगर ग़ुरूर है आदा को अपनी कसरत पर तो इस हयात को हम भी हबाब समझे हैं
If foes take pride in their vast number's might, we too hold this life as a bubble, frail and light.
If the enemies take pride in their vast numbers, we too consider this life to be nothing more than a fragile water bubble.

न कुछ ख़बर है हदीसों की इन सफ़ीहों को न ये मआनी-ए-उम्मुल-किताब समझे हैं
These fools possess no knowledge of tradition's lore, / Nor have they grasped the sacred Book's essential core.
These foolish people have no knowledge of the Hadiths, nor have they understood the meaning of the Quran (Umm al-Kitab).

कभी शक़ी मुतमत्ता न होंगे दुनिया से जिसे ये आब उसे हम सराब समझे हैं
The wretched shall never draw delight from this worldly stage; what others take for water, we have known to be a mirage.
The wretched and unfortunate can never truly enjoy this world, for what others believe to be life-giving water, we have always known to be merely a mirage.

मज़ील-ए-अक़्ल है दुनिया की दौलत ऐ मुनइ'म उसी के नश्शे को सूफ़ी शराब समझे हैं
Worldly wealth destroys the intellect, O rich man! It is that very intoxication which the Sufis have mistaken for wine.
O wealthy person, worldly riches destroy wisdom; it is this very intoxication of wealth that Sufis have mistaken for the intoxication of wine.

हरारतें हैं मआल-ए-हलावत-ए-दुनिया वो ज़हर है जिसे हम शहद-ए-नाब समझे हैं
Fevered torments are the final fate of worldly sweet delight; it is a deadly poison that we mistook for honey pure and bright.
The ultimate outcome of worldly sweetness is only burning torment. What we mistook for pure honey is actually poison.

'अनीस' मख़मल ओ दीबा से क्या फ़क़ीरों को इसी ज़मीन को हम फ़र्श-ए-ख़्वाब समझे हैं
What care have mendicants for velvet and silk brocade, O Anis? We have deemed this bare earth to be our carpet of dreams.
O Anis, what do mendicants have to do with velvet and silk? We have considered this bare earth itself to be our bed of dreams.
