Ghazal

Khwaja Azizul Hasan Majzoob· Ghazal· 8 shers

This ghazal portrays the multifaceted nature of devotion and sacrifice in love, where each lover surrenders to the beloved in a distinct manner. It reflects the romantic paradox that one who is completely lost upon the path of love becomes the truest guide for others.

1
Each lover was sacrificed to the slayer in a distinct, unique style: one fallen to a headless sword, one martyred by her heartless wile.
Every lover was sacrificed for the beloved killer in a distinct manner; one was slain by a blunt sword, while another fell martyr to cruel coquetry.
2
Along love's path, the more one lost all sight of destination, the more, O heart, was he fit to guide another on the way.
In the path of love, the more someone had lost their way and destination, O heart, the more capable they were of becoming a guide.
3
Enduring a thousand wounds, it could not even writhe—alas, what helplessness! From head to toe, your slaughtered prey was but a painted portrait of unrest.
What helplessness that despite suffering thousands of wounds, it could not even writhe. Your slaughtered prey, from head to toe, was merely an embodied portrait of restlessness.
4
In any case, one torment lingered in the malady of love: dying was easy for me, but abstinence was hard.
In the sickness of love, there was indeed one great torment: dying was easy for me, but abstinence was difficult.
5
It is a mercy that the river's depth has offered me a place; I was a burden on the cresting wave, a deadweight to the shore.
It is fortunate that the depth of the river gave me refuge, as I had become a burden upon the crest of the waves and a deadweight to the shore.
6
In the end, only my untethered heart was left all alone; companions were many, but each was bound to a destination.
In the end, only my free and unattached heart was left alone; there were many companions, but each one was bound to a destination.
7
Where then remained the song and wine, where the minstrel and the cupbearer? At the arrival of one brokenhearted, altered was the assembly's very color.
Where then was any song and wine, and where was the singer and the cupbearer? As soon as a broken-hearted person arrived, the entire mood of the gathering was completely changed.
8
May God keep the mystic safe, for he has startled me awake: what I had taken for the destination was merely a dream of the journey's end.
May God keep the ecstatic mystic safe, for he has startled me awake; what I had taken to be my destination was merely a dream of the destination.
