1
When cares of this and that distressed and overwhelmed my soul, I offered up my head to madness where storms of tumult roll.
When the worries and anxieties of worldly affairs troubled me, I surrendered my head to a chaotic and turbulent madness.
2
To what heights, O boundless longing, have you raised my love divine: first my life, then the soul of my life, and now the beloved of all souls.
O boundless longing, to what heights have you raised the beloved; first making them my life, then the soul of my life, and finally the beloved of all souls.
3
Barely had my beloved appeared when they were hidden once more; alas, what cruel injustice you have wrought, O weeping eye!
The beloved had just become visible, only to be hidden from sight once again; alas, O weeping eye, what great injustice you have done by blinding my vision with tears.
4
My vivid imagination turned a single rose into a blooming garden; the beauty of my gaze transformed the charm of the fair beyond compare.
My vibrant imagination turned a single flower into a whole garden, and the beauty of my admiring gaze transformed the charm of the fair ones into something extraordinary.
5
Even the pious ascetics were drawn into the revelers' fold; the daughter of the vine has turned hundreds into true believers.
The daughter of the vine (wine) brought even the pious ascetics into the gathering of drinkers, turning hundreds of them into true believers.
6
My life surrendered to the arrow, my blood spent upon the arrowhead; all that I possessed was offered in homage to the guest.
I surrendered my life to the arrow and spent my blood upon the arrowhead; whatever I had with me, I offered it all in hospitality to the guest.
7
The heartache turned into a remedy for every other pain; the trial of love made every hardship easy to sustain.
The ache of the heart became a cure for all other pains, and the difficulty of love made every other hardship easy.
8
My heart had almost settled in the cage, yet was disturbed anew; O fellow songbirds, why did you bring the garden into view?
My heart had just begun to settle into the cage, but was made restless again; O fellow birds, why did you bring up the mention of the garden?
9
When cruel heaven cast me out and stole the garden's bloom, my tears of blood showered my lap with rose-red blossoms in their room.
When fate deprived me of the garden, my bloody tears fell into my lap and filled it like flowers.
10
These tresses of yours, these eyes, this radiant face, and this glowing hue / By the wondrous power of God, a celestial houri was made mortal in you.
Your tresses, eyes, face, and complexion are so magnificent that it feels as though God's divine power has turned a heavenly houri into a human being.
