भवें तनती हैं ख़ंजर हाथ में है तन के बैठे हैं किसी से आज बिगड़ी है कि वो यूँ बन के बैठे हैं
Brows tightly knit, a dagger in hand, they sit upright and proud; with whom did they fall out today, that they sit so haughtily adorned?
Their brows are furrowed, a dagger is in their hand, and they sit stiff and upright. It seems they have had a falling out with someone today, which is why they are sitting so decked out and defiant.

दिलों पर सैकड़ों सिक्के तिरे जोबन के बैठे हैं कलेजों पर हज़ारों तीर इस चितवन के बैठे हैं
Upon hearts, a hundred seals of your blooming youth are stamped; in breasts, a thousand arrows of your sidelong glance are lodged.
Hundreds of coins of your youthful beauty are stamped upon hearts, and thousands of arrows of your sidelong glance are struck deep in the breasts.

इलाही क्यूँ नहीं उठती क़यामत माजरा क्या है हमारे सामने पहलू में वो दुश्मन के बैठे हैं
O God, why does Doomsday not arise? What mystery holds it back? / Right before my eyes, my beloved sits beside my rival.
O God, why does Doomsday not arrive, what is the matter? Right in front of our eyes, my beloved sits beside my enemy.

ये गुस्ताख़ी ये छेड़ अच्छी नहीं है ऐ दिल-ए-नादाँ अभी फिर रूठ जाएँगे अभी तो मन के बैठे हैं
This audacity, this teasing bodes no good, O foolish heart — they will take offense once more, having only just been appeased.
O foolish heart, this audacity and teasing are not good; they have only just been appeased and will get upset again.

असर है जज़्ब-ए-उल्फ़त में तो खिंच कर आ ही जाएँगे हमें पर्वा नहीं हम से अगर वो तन के बैठे हैं
If love's true pull holds any power, they will surely be drawn to me; I care not in the least if they sit aloof with haughty pride.
If there is true power in love's attraction, they will inevitably be drawn to me; I do not care if they sit aloof and pridefully estranged from me.

सुबुक हो जाएँगे गर जाएँगे वो बज़्म-ए-दुश्मन में कि जब तक घर में बैठे हैं वो लाखों मन के बैठे हैं
They will lose all their weight should they attend the rival's feast; / As long as they remain at home, a hundred thousand maunds they weigh.
If they go to the gathering of the enemy, they will lose their dignity and become light (worthless); their immense weight and honor last only as long as they remain inside their own home.

फ़ुसूँ है या दुआ है या मुअ'म्मा खुल नहीं सकता वो कुछ पढ़ते हुए आगे मिरे मदफ़न के बैठे हैं
Is it a spell, a prayer, or an enigma none can divine? Murmuring something softly, they sit before this grave of mine.
It cannot be understood whether it is a magic spell, a prayer, or a riddle; they are sitting in front of my grave reciting something.

बहुत रोया हूँ मैं जब से ये मैं ने ख़्वाब देखा है कि आप आँसू बहाते सामने दुश्मन के बैठे हैं
I have wept endlessly ever since I saw this dream, / that you sit shedding tears in the presence of the foe.
Ever since I saw this dream in which you are sitting and shedding tears in front of the enemy, I have wept bitterly.

खड़े हों ज़ेर-ए-तूबा वो न दम लेने को दम भर भी जो हसरत-मंद तेरे साया-ए-दामन के बैठे हैं
They would not pause even for a breath beneath the celestial Tūbā tree, who sit yearning only for the sheltering shadow of your hem.
Those who yearn for the shelter of your mantle would not pause to catch their breath even for a single moment under the shade of the heavenly Tuba tree.

तलाश-ए-मंज़िल-ए-मक़्सद की गर्दिश उठ नहीं सकती कमर खोले हुए रस्ते में हम रहज़न के बैठे हैं
The weary wandering in search of the goal can no longer be borne; with girdles loosened, we sit resigned along the highwayman's path.
We can no longer endure the hardships of wandering in search of our destination; exhausted, we have resigned ourselves and sat right in the path of the robber.

ये जोश-ए-गिर्या तो देखो कि जब फ़ुर्क़त में रोया हूँ दर ओ दीवार इक पल में मिरे मदफ़न के बैठे हैं
Behold this surge of weeping: whenever in separation I have cried, the very doors and walls of my tomb collapsed in a single moment.
Look at the intensity of my weeping that whenever I cried in the agony of separation, the doors and walls of my tomb collapsed in an instant.

निगाह-ए-शोख़ ओ चश्म-ए-शौक़ में दर-पर्दा छनती है कि वो चिलमन में हैं नज़दीक हम चिलमन के बैठे हैं
Behind the veil, her playful glance and my longing gaze filter and meet; for she sits near within the screen, and close beside it is my seat.
The beloved's playful glance and the lover's eager gaze filter through the veil and meet, because she is sitting close behind the screen and I am sitting right next to it outside.

ये उठना बैठना महफ़िल में उन का रंग लाएगा क़यामत बन के उट्ठेंगे भबूका बन के बैठे हैं
Their rising and sitting in this gathering will surely show its hue; they sit smoldering like a blazing ember, and will rise as the Day of Doom.
Their presence and movements in this gathering will surely bring about serious consequences; currently, they sit smoldering like glowing embers, and when they rise, they will rise like Doomsday.

किसी की शामत आएगी किसी की जान जाएगी किसी की ताक में वो बाम पर बन-ठन के बैठे हैं
Someone's doom draws near tonight, someone's life shall slip away; Waiting in ambush on the roof, all dressed up they sit today.
Someone is bound to meet their doom and lose their life, as the beloved is sitting all dressed up on the rooftop lying in wait for someone.

क़सम दे कर उन्हें ये पूछ लो तुम रंग-ढंग उस के तुम्हारी बज़्म में कुछ दोस्त भी दुश्मन के बैठे हैं
Bind them by an oath and ask of his true ways, for seated in your assembly are friends of the enemy too.
Make them swear an oath and ask about his true ways and conduct, for some friends of the enemy are also sitting in your gathering.

कोई छींटा पड़े तो 'दाग़' कलकत्ते चले जाएँ अज़ीमाबाद में हम मुंतज़िर सावन के बैठे हैं
Should but a single droplet fall, Dagh would set out for Calcutta; yet here in Azimabad we linger, waiting for the monsoon rains.
If even a single droplet of rain falls, Dagh would depart for Calcutta, yet here in Azimabad we sit waiting for the monsoon.
