Jigar Moradabadi· Ghazal· 13 shers· radif:

This ghazal captures the overwhelming pain and disorientation of love, where union with the beloved brings enduring heartache rather than solace. It reflects on the lifelong sorrow of giving away one's heart only to receive lasting emotional wounds in return.

The effect of my heart's lamenting did not suit me well at all; now that you have come at last, I have lost all sense of self.
The effect of my heart's cry did not suit me well, and now that you have met me, I have lost all awareness of myself.
2
You took my heart from me and gave a wounded soul in return; this is something I shall never forget for as long as I live.
You took my heart from me and gave me deep wounds and sorrow in return; this is something I will never forget for the rest of my life.
3
In every direction, that radiant presence appears to me; ah, what endless illusions my own eyes weave for me!
I see my beloved appearing in every direction; my own eyes are deceiving me in countless ways.
4
No longer do I taste the sweet delight of an aching heart; could it be that her mischief-making gaze has forgotten me?
I no longer feel the sweet pleasure of the ache in my heart; I fear that the beloved's mischievous glance has forgotten me.
5
Self-oblivion has cast me upon so strange a way: eyes I possess, yet nothing meets my sight.
Self-oblivion has set me upon such a strange path; though I have eyes, I can see nothing at all.
6
Today I must confront the solemn preacher face to face; if only your gaze could be mine for a fleeting moment.
Today I have to face the preacher or counselor; I only wish I could have the favor of your gaze for a brief moment.
7
In drunken ecstasy, I tread love's boundless way; let the pull of my yearning sweep me wherever it may.
I am traversing the path of love in an intoxicated, ecstatic state; now, let the irresistible pull of my passion take me wherever it pleases.
8
I tremble beholding the beloved's radiant face, lest my own gaze should claim me as its captive.
I am afraid looking at the radiant beauty of my beloved's face, fearing that my own gaze might captivate me completely.
9
Alike is the hue of ecstasy that beauty and love share: she has no knowledge of herself, nor of myself am I aware.
The intoxication of both beauty and love is identical; neither do they have any awareness of themselves, nor do I have any awareness of myself.
10
Laying my head in humble submission at their feet, I must die; today, I must bring this tale of sorrow to an end.
I want to die by placing my head in humble devotion at my beloved's feet, and bring an end to this tale of sorrow today.
11
Dearer than the breast is the heart, and dearer than the heart are you; yet dearest of all to me remains a single glance from you.
To me, the heart is dearer than my chest, and you are dearer than my heart, but dearest of all to me is your glance.
12
If I am far away, why direct your speech to me? / If you are near, why do you not appear before my eyes?
If I am far away, why is your conversation directed at me, and if you are near, why do you not appear before my eyes?
13
Who knows what fate awaits me within the cage; as yet, at least, my wings and feathers are dear to me.
Who knows what fate awaits inside the cage; at least until now, my wings and feathers are still dear to me.
