सब लोग जिधर वो हैं उधर देख रहे हैं

सब लोग जिधर वो हैं उधर देख रहे हैं
हम देखने वालों की नज़र देख रहे हैं
All eyes are turned toward where the beloved stands, while I am watching the gaze of those who look.
Everyone is looking in the direction where the beloved is, while I am simply watching the gaze of those who are looking.

तेवर तिरे ऐ रश्क-ए-क़मर देख रहे हैं
हम शाम से आसार-ए-सहर देख रहे हैं
Watching your furrowed brow, O envy of the moon, / Ever since dusk fell, we behold the signs of dawn.
O beloved who makes the moon envious, we are watching your furrowed brow, and ever since evening we have been seeing the signs of dawn.

मेरा दिल-ए-गुम-गश्ता जो ढूँडा नहीं मिलता
वो अपना दहन अपनी कमर देख रहे हैं
My vanished heart cannot be found, though sought in every place;
They look within their tiny mouth, and search their slender waist.
When my lost heart cannot be found despite being searched for, the beloved is looking for it in their mouth and waist.

कोई तो निकल आएगा सरबाज़-ए-मोहब्बत
दिल देख रहे हैं वो जिगर देख रहे हैं
Surely someone will emerge to stake their life for love; they examine the heart, they test the courage.
They are testing the hearts and courage of people, hoping that someone will surely emerge who is willing to sacrifice their life for love.

है मजमा-ए-अग़्यार कि हंगामा-ए-महशर
क्या सैर मिरे दीदा-ए-तर देख रहे हैं
Is this a gathering of rivals, or the tumult of Judgment Day? What a spectacle these tear-stained eyes of mine behold!
Is this a crowd of rivals or the chaos of the Day of Judgment? What an astonishing spectacle my tearful eyes are witnessing!

अब ऐ निगह-ए-शौक़ न रह जाए तमन्ना
इस वक़्त उधर से वो इधर देख रहे हैं
O gaze of ardent longing, let no desire remain unspent; at this very moment, from over there, their eyes are turned my way.
O longing gaze, let no desire remain unfulfilled now, because at this very moment the beloved is looking over here from that side.

हर-चंद कि हर रोज़ की रंजिश है क़यामत
हम कोई दिन उस को भी मगर देख रहे हैं
Though every day's estrangement brings a doomsday of despair, yet for a few more days we watch and somehow bear.
Although this daily estrangement and bitterness feels as unbearable as doomsday, we are nevertheless enduring it and watching it for a few more days.

आमद है किसी की कि गया कोई इधर से
क्यूँ सब तरफ़-ए-राहगुज़र देख रहे हैं
Does someone arrive, or has someone departed from here? Why is everyone gazing toward the pathway?
Is someone arriving, or has someone just left from here? Why is everyone looking in the direction of the pathway?

तकरार तजल्ली ने तिरे जल्वे में क्यूँ की
हैरत-ज़दा सब अहल-ए-नज़र देख रहे हैं
Why did radiance repeat its flash within your grand display? Struck with wonder, all discerning eyes can only gaze.
Why did the divine light manifest repeatedly in your appearance? All discerning observers are watching in utter bewilderment.

नैरंग है एक एक तिरा दीद के क़ाबिल
हम ऐ फ़लक-ए-शोबदा-गर देख रहे हैं
Every single illusion of yours is well worth beholding; O conjuring heavens, we are watching.
O juggler heavens, every single illusion and trick of yours is worth watching, and we are beholding it all.

कब तक है तुम्हारा सुख़न-ए-तल्ख़ गवारा
इस ज़हर में कितना है असर देख रहे हैं
How long your bitter speech can be endured, we wait and see; we watch to test how potent this poison proves to be.
We are watching to see how long your bitter words can be tolerated and how potent the effect of this poison really is.

कुछ देख रहे हैं दिल-ए-बिस्मिल का तड़पना
कुछ ग़ौर से क़ातिल का हुनर देख रहे हैं
Some watch the writhing anguish of the wounded heart, while others closely study the slayer's skillful art.
Some people are watching the wounded heart writhe in pain, while others are closely observing the skill and art of the killer.

अब तक तो जो क़िस्मत ने दिखाया वही देखा
आइंदा हो क्या नफ़ा ओ ज़रर देख रहे हैं
Till now, I beheld only what destiny chose to display; what profit or loss lies ahead, we wait and watch today.
Until now we only witnessed whatever destiny showed us, and now we wait to see what gain or loss the future brings.

पहले तो सुना करते थे आशिक़ की मुसीबत
अब आँख से वो आठ पहर देख रहे हैं
Once they had only heard tales of a lover's plight; now with their own eyes, they watch it day and night.
Earlier they only used to hear about the suffering of a lover, but now they are witnessing it with their own eyes all day and night.

क्यूँ कुफ़्र है दीदार-ए-सनम हज़रत-ए-वाइज़
अल्लाह दिखाता है बशर देख रहे हैं
Why brand the sight of the beloved heresy, O preacher? It is God who reveals the vision, and mortals merely gaze.
O preacher, why is looking at the beloved considered infidelity? It is God who reveals the sight, and mortals are merely beholding it.

ख़त ग़ैर का पढ़ते थे जो टोका तो वो बोले
अख़बार का परचा है ख़बर देख रहे हैं
Caught reading a rival's letter, when challenged they replied: 'Tis merely a newspaper sheet, we are only reading the news.
They were reading a rival's letter, and when interrupted, they excused themselves by saying it was just a newspaper sheet and they were merely checking the news.

पढ़ पढ़ के वो दम करते हैं कुछ हाथ पर अपने
हँस हँस के मिरे ज़ख़्म-ए-जिगर देख रहे हैं
Reciting charms, upon their hands they blow their breath, / While smiling softly, they gaze upon the wounds of my heart.
They are reciting something and blowing onto their hands, while looking at the wounds of my heart with a smile.

मैं 'दाग़' हूँ मरता हूँ इधर देखिए मुझ को
मुँह फेर के ये आप किधर देख रहे हैं
I am Dagh, dying for you—look this way at me; turning your face away, where else are you gazing?
I am Dagh and I am dying in longing for you, so please look towards me; why have you turned your face away, and where are you gazing?
