This ghazal reflects on the transient nature of mortal life, lamenting that nothing remains of legendary lovers like Qais and Farhad except their enduring tales.
Neither Qais nor Farhad remains within this world; only the legend of the lovers lingers in memory.
Neither Qais nor Farhad remained in this world; only the story of these lovers has been left behind in memory.

This stubborn soul remained deprived of death's sweet thrill; the dagger struck, but the executioner's arm lost its will.
This tough-lived soul remained unsatisfied with being killed, because as the dagger struck, the executioner's arm grew weary and stopped.

The fetters of love kept me helpless and bound; yet amidst a hundred captivities, free I remained.
The restrictions of love kept me helpless, yet despite a hundred captivities, I remained free.

The idol's intoxicating glance has ruined a thousand homes, it is true; only the Kaaba remained thriving, and that but for a day or two.
The beloved's glance has ruined thousands of homes, and only the Kaaba remained inhabited, that too for merely a few days.

On Judgment Day, in place of grievance, I offered thanks unto my love; that which I ought to have forgotten was all that lingered in my mind.
On the Day of Judgment, instead of complaining, I ended up thanking my beloved, because the very thing I was supposed to forget was all that I remembered.

Fortune favored them indeed, winning a life for free; what remains tied in your purse, O sorrowful heart?
Fortune favored them as they gained a life for free, but what is left in your possession now, O sorrowful heart?

This house of darkness will be bathed in radiant light, if in the heart this God-given passion for idols abides.
If this God-given love or passion for idols remains in the heart, this abode of darkness will certainly become filled with radiant light.

Her eyes made a fleeting sign, then turned away / As though a word reached her lips, yet remained unsaid.
Their eyes made a gesture and turned away, as though some word reached the lips but was left unsaid.

The preacher too, like me, felt tempted by love's call, / Yet seeing its calamities, held back from the fall.
The preacher's heart too was tempted to love just like mine, but observing the hardships and misfortunes of love, he held himself back.

Good or bad, all found a haven in your heart; ruined and homeless, I alone was left undone.
Everyone, whether good or bad, found a place in your heart, but I alone was left homeless and completely ruined.
11
Gone are the days when in my chest there lingered an ache, a scratch; where is the heart now? Only the memory of its trace remains.
Those days are gone when there was some ache or scratch in my chest; now where is the heart, only a memory of its trace remains.

Beholding your face, the soul of creation is drawn away; clutching his heart time and again, even the master Bihzad was left undone.
Seeing your face, the life of all creation is drawn out in astonishment, and even the master painter Bihzad was left helpless, repeatedly holding his heart.

O Dagh, restrained by love, the heart dissolved within in pain; alas, the yearning to weep and wail unvoiced did still remain.
O Dagh, while restraining love's pain, the heart quietly dissolved from within; alas, the longing to lament and cry out remained unfulfilled.
