From You is the beginning, and in You one day all things shall end; no music from the lute will stay, nor any soundless instrument remain.
Everything begins with You and one day everything will end with You; neither the music of the instrument will remain, nor will any silent instrument be left.
2
We know it well, hear from us what Judgment Day will be: while all the world is gazing at Him, His eyes will look on me.
We know what will happen on the Day of Judgment, hear it from us: everyone will be looking at Him, while He will be looking at us.
3
On the Day of Reckoning, what else could become of sinners such as we? If the gates of Heaven do not open, the door of Mercy surely will.
On the Day of Judgment, what else will happen to sinners like us? If the door of Paradise does not open, the door of divine mercy surely will.
4
Be it heaven or hell, whatever judgment is decreed; is it not enough that we shall at last stand face to face?
Whether the final judgment turns out to be hell or heaven, whatever is decided will happen; is it any small matter that we will at least come face to face with them?
5
Be it eternity's dawn or its endless eve, both are held captive in the Beloved's locks; wherever you turn your gaze, this unbroken chain is all you shall see.
Whether it is the beginning of time or eternity, both are captive to the beloved's locks; wherever you raise your eyes, only this single unbroken chain will be seen.
6
This bond of love cannot fail to reveal its vibrant hue; whoever belongs to God's Beloved shall be beloved of God too.
This connection of love cannot remain without showing its effect and color; whoever belongs to God's Beloved will certainly become beloved to God as well.
7
On this sole hope do we, the seekers of sorrow, endure: Blessed be this pain of yours, for it admits no cure.
We, the seekers of pain, live only on this hope: how blessed is the pain given by you, for it will be yours and completely incurable.
8
Even at a glance of wrath, he sits having surrendered heart and soul; if a gaze of grace should fall upon the lover, what then will become of him?
When the lover has already lost his heart and soul merely to an angry glance, what will become of him if a look of love and grace falls upon him?
9
He may well banish us from Judgment Day straight into Hell, yet what the heart must undergo, only the heart can tell.
The clever or wise one may well dispatch us from the Day of Judgment into Hell, but what the heart will suffer then is something only the heart itself knows.
10
What do you take love's mad devotees for, O ascetic? Whichever way they turn, God Himself shall be there.
O ascetic, what do you think of the mad lovers of God? Whichever direction they turn, God will be right there.
11
On Judgment Day, Jigar's hand shall clasp the Prophet's hem; be it grievance or complaint, whatever is spoken will be declared in plain sight.
On the Day of Judgment, Jigar's hand will hold the hem of the Prophet's robe; whether it is a complaint or a grievance, whatever is said will be spoken openly in plain sight.
