Who would dare seek justice for the one her glance has slain?
The lover's blood is decreed as free water poured in vain.
Who could seek justice for the one slain by her? The lover's blood has been decreed like free water poured out for all.

Let us see just how the road of love is to be traversed—
where neither milestone nor marker-stone holds sway for us.
Let us see how the road of love is to be traversed, when for us neither a milestone nor a marker-stone has any sway.

each bell lies hushed, its voice but dust-kohl scattered on this path.
Silent caravans travel toward the road of oblivion, and every bell has become the kohl made from the dust of this path.

How can a humble pigeon bear the letter of my longing there,
To that high place where even Gabriel finds no station, no repair?
How can a poor pigeon carry the letter of longing to that place where even Gabriel has no station?
6
On your path I need no Khizr to guide my straying feet;
My own longing serves me as the proof that lights my way.
On your path I have no need of Khizr as a guide; my own longing does the work of a guide for me.
7
The night-faring travelers need no lamp to light their way,
For every mote upon your path is blazing like the sun.
At night the travelers have no need of a lamp, for every speck of dust on your path shines like the sun.
8
In search of Yusuf the caravans set forth and roam,
The bells lament, the drum of parting thunders loud for home.
The caravans have set out in search of Yusuf; the bells are wailing and the drum of departure is sounding loudly.

friend to the afflicted, companion of the ailing too.
There is no one else like you who shows kindness to the helpless; you are the friend of the sorrowful and the companion of the sick.

In the hour of hardship, You became Your Friend Khalil's defender.
You turned Nimrod's fire into a blooming garden; in the time of difficulty You became the helper of Your friend Khalil (Abraham).
11
At Thy command the sea gave Moses a path to tread,
And in the Nile's own flood Thou drowned the Pharaoh dead.
By Thy command the sea made way for Moses, and Thou drowned Pharaoh in the river Nile.

truly, were it not eternal, I would stand as surety for my Protector.
The steering of Noah's ark in the storm—truly, were it not eternal, I would stand as surety for my Protector.

When Munkar and Nakir shall ask me whose devoted slave I am,
A lover am I—I'll say: a slave of Jamil's, this I'll proclaim.
When the angels Munkar and Nakir ask whose slave I am, being a lover I will reply that I am the slave of Jamil.

A beggar am I, bound by no constraint of less or more;
The Generous One holds sway over both the scant and the vast.
I am a beggar, bound by no restriction of little or much; the Generous One is the master of both the scant and the plentiful.

Too short the lasso here, too weak the ladder stands;
the roof of my desire is the Throne of the Glorious Lord.
Here the lasso falls short and the ladder is inadequate; the roof of my desire is the Throne of the Glorious Lord.
16

that an elephant's might cannot overpower a gnat here.
May the renown of your justice reach every ear, such that even an elephant's strength cannot prevail over a gnat.

I looked, and thorn and rose share one same branch, I see;
You break no heart, be it the noble's or the low's, for thee.
When I looked, the thorn and the rose both have their place on one and the same branch; you break no one's heart, whether they be honoured or lowly.

The lightning of Thy splendour ground Mount Sinai into kohl—
Thou wished, for darkened lashes, to grace a lover's eye.
When the lightning of Thy manifestation ground Mount Sinai into fine kohl, it was because Thou desired this splendour to adorn a kohl-lined eye.
