From the heart, the beloved's memory can never be erased; 'tis a scar upon the chest that shall never be effaced.
The thought of the beloved can never be forgotten from the heart. It is a wound upon the chest that can never be erased.

Though a thousand modesties hold you back, and a myriad restraints bind me, love is a secret of such a kind that hidden it cannot be.
No matter how much shyness you possess and how much self-restraint I have, love is a secret that can never remain hidden.
3
O heart, the rival's pleasure is the condition to please the beloved; by no means can this heavy burden of love be borne.
O heart, the beloved's pleasure is conditioned upon pleasing the rival; by no means can this unbearable burden of love be carried.
4
I have experienced far too many of such tender mercies from her; now I can no longer bring myself to walk into the jaws of death.
I have experienced so many of their kindnesses that I can no longer bring myself to step into the jaws of death.
5
The wine is fierce and frail the spirit of the gathered throng; / The cupbearer will not dare to serve a goblet brimming full.
The wine is very strong and the capacity and endurance of the people in the gathering is limited, so the cupbearer will not be able to serve a full cup.
6
I am content if even a friend turns into a foe, but never could an enemy be made a friend by me.
We are willing to accept that a friend may turn into an enemy, but we will never be able to turn an enemy into a friend.
7
Why bring up the subject of our not meeting tonight? / For if I ask the reason, you will not be able to explain.
Why do you bring up the topic of not meeting tonight? If we ask for the reason, you will not be able to explain it.
8
Why would they not take offense at every little thing, knowing full well that I am not one who cannot be coaxed and won back again?
Why should they not get annoyed at every little thing, when they know very well that I am not someone who cannot be appeased?
9
If reaching you depends upon the favor of strangers, with just how many rivals must one cultivate intimacy?
If meeting you depends upon intermediaries or strangers, with just how many people can one possibly cultivate closeness?
10
My true intent was never revealed, yet this much is known: I seek that which can never be found.
My true purpose was never revealed, except this much: that is, I am searching for something that can never be found.
11
Do not embroil yourself, O Hali, in the quarrels of the pious; / This is a dispute, sire, that you will never be able to settle.
O Hali, you should not get involved in the disputes of religious people. This is a conflict that you will not be able to resolve.
