दिल को दर्द-आश्ना किया तू ने
दर्द-ए-दिल को दवा किया तू ने
You made my heart familiar with pain, and turned that very heartache into its own cure.

तब-ए-इंसाँ को दी सिरिश्त-ए-वफ़ा
ख़ाक को कीमिया किया तू ने
You endowed the human nature with the essence of fidelity; you transmuted mere dust into gold by your wondrous alchemy.

वस्ल-ए-जानाँ मुहाल ठहराया
क़त्ल-ए-आशिक़ रवा किया तू ने
Union with the beloved you deemed impossible to be, / Yet the slaying of the lover you sanctioned lawfully.
You made union with the beloved impossible, yet you deemed the killing of the lover permissible.

था न जुज़ ग़म बिसात-ए-आशिक़ में
ग़म को राहत-फ़ज़ा किया तू ने
There was naught save sorrow in the lover's meager store; yet that very grief you turned to solace evermore.
There was nothing in the lover's possession except grief, but you turned even that sorrow into a source of comfort.

जान थी इक वबाल फ़ुर्क़त में
शौक़ को जाँ-गुज़ा किया तू ने
In separation, life was already an affliction to bear; yet you turned my desire into a torment that consumes the soul.
Life was already a heavy affliction in separation, and yet you made longing into something that destroys the soul.

थी मोहब्बत में नंग मिन्नत-ए-ग़ैर
जज़्ब-ए-दिल को रसा किया तू ने
To plead with another in love was a shame and disgrace; / You granted the deep pull of my heart the reach to find your embrace.
In love, pleading with or relying on a third party was a disgrace, but you made my heart's inner yearning and attraction so effective that it reached you on its own.

राह ज़ाहिद को जब कहीं न मिली
दर-ए-मय-ख़ाना वा किया तू ने
When the ascetic found no path left anywhere, You threw wide open the door of the tavern.
When the ascetic found no way left anywhere, You opened the door of the tavern for him.

क़त्अ होने ही जब लगा पैवंद
ग़ैर को आश्ना किया तू ने
Just as the bond between us was about to sever, you took a stranger and made them your confidant forever.
Just as our bond was about to be severed, you made a stranger your close companion.

थी जहाँ कारवाँ को देनी राह
इश्क़ को रहनुमा किया तू ने
Where the caravan needed to be shown the way, / You appointed Love to be its guide.
Where the caravan was to be shown the way, you made love its guide.

नाव भर कर जहाँ डुबोनी थी
अक़्ल को नाख़ुदा किया तू ने
Where the laden boat was meant to be sunk, / You made Reason the captain of the ship.
Where the fully loaded boat was meant to be drowned, you made intellect the captain of the ship.

बढ़ गई जब पिदर को मेहर-ए-पिसर
उस को उस से जुदा किया तू ने
The moment a father's love for his son grew deep, / You tore the one away from the other.
When a father's love for his son grew deep, You separated the two from each other.

जब हुआ मुल्क ओ माल रहज़न-ए-होश
बादशह को गदा किया तू ने
When realm and wealth turned plunderers of his sense, You brought the sovereign king to a beggar's state.
When kingdom and wealth robbed a ruler of his senses, You turned that emperor into a beggar.

जब मिली काम-ए-जाँ को लज़्ज़त-ए-दर्द
दर्द को बे-दवा किया तू ने
No sooner did the palate of my soul savor the relish of pain, than You made that very pain incurable, beyond any remedy.
Just as the palate of my soul began to relish the pleasure of pain, You made that pain completely incurable.

जब दिया राह-रौ को ज़ौक़-ए-तलब
सई को ना-रसा किया तू ने
When You bestowed upon the traveler the passion to seek, You rendered all striving futile and unable to reach.
When You gave the traveler the longing to seek, You rendered his striving incapable of reaching the destination.

पर्दा-ए-चश्म थे हिजाब बहुत
हुस्न को ख़ुद-नुमा किया तू ने
Veils enough were cast across the eyes already, yet You made beauty display itself.
There were already many veils covering the eyes, yet You made beauty reveal and manifest itself.

इश्क़ को ताब-ए-इंतिज़ार न थी
ग़ुर्फ़ा इक दिल में वा किया तू ने
Love had no patience to endure the wait; in the heart, you opened a window wide.
Love lacked the patience to wait, so you opened a window inside the heart.

हरम आबाद और दैर ख़राब
जो किया सब बजा किया तू ने
The sanctuary flourishes while the temple lies in ruin; whatever You have done, You have done entirely right.
You kept the sacred sanctuary populated and left the idol-temple in ruins; whatever You did, You did entirely right.

सख़्त अफ़्सुर्दा तब्अ' थी अहबाब
हम को जादू नवा किया तू ने
My spirit was deeply sunken in despair, O friends; yet you have turned me into a singer of enchanted melodies.
O friends, my disposition was deeply sorrowful and depressed, but you transformed me into a singer of magical melodies.

फिर जो देखा तो कुछ न था या रब
कौन पूछे कि क्या किया तू ने
When I looked again, there was nothing, O Lord—who is left to question what You have done?
When I looked again, there was nothing left, O Lord; who is there now to ask You what You have done?

'हाली' उट्ठा हिला के महफ़िल को
आख़िर अपना कहा किया तू ने
You rose, O Hali, shaking the assembly to its core; / In the end, you did just what you had declared before.
O Hali, you stood up after deeply stirring the entire gathering; in the end, you did exactly what you had said you would do.
