बात कुछ हम से बन न आई आज
बोल कर हम ने मुँह की खाई आज
Nothing went right with what I tried to say today; by daring to speak, I only tasted defeat today.
Today, we could not manage to say things right, and by speaking up, we only faced defeat and embarrassment.

चुप पर अपनी भरम थे क्या क्या कुछ
बात बिगड़ी बनी बनाई आज
What proud illusions did my silence keep; today, a settled matter came undone.
I had so many illusions about the dignity of my silence, but today a completely settled matter got ruined.

शिकवा करने की ख़ू न थी अपनी
पर तबीअत ही कुछ भर आई आज
Complaining was never a habit of mine, yet today, my heart simply overflowed.

बज़्म साक़ी ने दी उलट सारी
ख़ूब भर भर के ख़ुम लुंढाई आज
The cupbearer turned the whole gathering upside down; today, brimming casks of wine were tipped over without measure.
Today, the cupbearer tipped over full jars of wine in great abundance and threw the entire gathering into disarray.

मासियत पर है देर से या रब
नफ़्स और शरा में लड़ाई आज
Over the act of sin, O Lord, a battle has waged so long—
Between base desire and sacred law today.
O Lord, a conflict has been going on for a long time today between base desire and divine law over committing a sin.

ग़ालिब आता है नफ़्स-ए-दूँ या शरअ'
देखनी है तिरी ख़ुदाई आज
Will base desire prevail, or the sacred Law? Today I must witness the power of Your divinity.

चोर है दिल में कुछ न कुछ यारो
नींद फिर रात भर न आई आज
There lurks some secret thief within the heart, my friends, it seems; tonight again, the whole night passed untouched by sleep or dreams.
Friends, there is surely some hidden fear or secret guilt in the heart, because once again tonight I could not sleep at all.

ज़द से उल्फ़त की बच के चलना था
मुफ़्त 'हाली' ने चोट खाई आज
One ought to have steered clear of love's line of fire; for nothing did Hali suffer a wound today.
One should have carefully stayed out of love's line of fire, but today Hali ended up getting hurt for no reason at all.
