चर्ख़ से कुछ उमीद थी ही नहीं

चर्ख़ से कुछ उमीद थी ही नहीं
आरज़ू मैं ने कोई की ही नहीं
I never harbored any hope from the turning skies, nor did I ever let a single longing rise.
I had no expectations at all from the sky (fate), nor did I ever make any wish whatsoever.

मज़हबी बहस मैं ने की ही नहीं
फ़ालतू अक़्ल मुझ में थी ही नहीं
In religious debates I never took part; no surplus intellect had I for that art.
I never took part in religious debates because I did not possess any surplus intellect.

चाहता था बहुत सी बातों को
मगर अफ़्सोस अब वो जी ही नहीं
I once yearned for so many things in life, but alas, that longing heart within me is no more.
I used to desire so many things, but sadly, that heart or inclination within me is no longer there.

जुरअत-ए-अर्ज़-ए-हाल क्या होती
नज़र-ए-लुत्फ़ उस ने की ही नहीं
How could I dare to speak of my heart's plight, when never once did a glance of grace turn my way?
How could I have had the courage to express the state of my heart, when they never even cast a glance of kindness upon me?

इस मुसीबत में दिल से क्या कहता
कोई ऐसी मिसाल थी ही नहीं
What could I have said to comfort my heart in this ordeal? / There was simply no precedent of its kind.

आप क्या जानें क़द्र-ए-या-अल्लाह
जब मुसीबत कोई पड़ी ही नहीं
What could you ever know of the worth of calling 'O God!',
When no misfortune has ever befallen you at all?
How could you ever know the true value of calling out 'O God' (Ya Allah), when you have never faced any adversity or trouble at all?

शिर्क छोड़ा तो सब ने छोड़ दिया
मेरी कोई सोसाइटी ही नहीं
Once I renounced my idols, I was forsaken by all; alas, I belong to no society at all.
When I gave up polytheism, everyone abandoned me, and now I have no society or circle of my own left.

पूछा 'अकबर' है आदमी कैसा
हँस के बोले वो आदमी ही नहीं
When asked, 'What sort of a man is Akbar?' / With a laugh they said, 'He is no man at all!'
When someone asked what kind of a man Akbar is, they laughed and replied that he is not a man at all.
