1
Why should he not be rapt in primal ecstasy, who has tasted the wine of the Primordial Covenant?
Why should someone not be intoxicated with primal ecstasy when he has received the mystical wine of the primordial covenant?
2
He was Himself the petitioner, and He the granter too; to whom then should I openly reveal this secret truth?
He Himself was the petitioner and He Himself was the granter; to whom can I now openly reveal this secret?
3
Somewhere He became the candle illuminating the feast; somewhere turning into the moth, He burned Himself away.
Somewhere He Himself became the candle that lights up the gathering, and somewhere He Himself turned into a moth and burned.
4
Somewhere hidden in the dust as a dormant seed, somewhere a flourishing bough in blossom and fruit.
Somewhere it lies hidden in the soil as a seed, while somewhere else it blooms and bears fruit as the branch of a tree.
5
Let no pious ascetic rave like Mansur or Sarmad; O Jon, what matters if you became Qais, or what if Farhad?
If someone babbles like Mansur and Sarmad acting all pious, then O Jon, what does it matter whether you became Qais (Majnun) or Farhad?
6
Though a dervish unbound, detached from this worldly realm — what if certainty were attained, what if one were set free?
Even if you are a dervish fully detached and liberated from this worldly existence, what difference does it make if you gained certainty or if you were set free?
7
Why swell with empty pride over this world so vain? What if one were Pharaoh, or Shaddad in their reign?
It is completely futile for anyone to be proud of worldly power or wealth; even if one were to become as mighty as Pharaoh or Shaddad, what would it matter?
8
When the wise bird cares nothing for the snare, what matters then the trap, and what the hunter?
When a wise bird has no fear or care for the trap, then the existence of neither the net nor the hunter matters at all.
9
When years bring no discernment between the humble and the great, what matters if one is a disciple or a master of high estate?
If with age one still lacks the discernment to distinguish between insignificance and greatness, then it makes no difference whether one is a student or a master.
10
The one whose memory fills my every breath, each passing moment through; if one day, O Turab, I cross their mind, what difference does it make?
I remember that person at every single moment; so even if they happened to remember me on just one day, O Turab, what difference does it make?
