Like dervishes we came, called out, and went our way; / 'Be happy, friend!'—we offered a blessing and went our way.
We came like beggars or dervishes, called out, and departed; we merely gave the blessing, 'May you remain happy, friend,' and went on our way.

We, who once swore we could not live without you, depart at last, having fulfilled that vow.
We, who used to say that we could not live without you, are now departing this world having fulfilled that promise.
3
Healing was never written in my fate, though I sought every remedy to the limits of my power.
Cure was simply not written in my destiny, even though I tried remedies to the utmost limit of my ability.
4
Such circumstances befell at the end of it all, that helpless, burning our very hearts in grief, we departed.
In the end, such circumstances arose that, being completely helpless, we had to depart while burning in grief.
5
Ah, what is that thing for the sake of which / We detached our heart from everything and departed?
Ah, what is that thing for whose sake we detached our hearts from everything and walked away?
6
You might have cast at least a hopeless glance; instead, you walked past, hiding even your face from me.
You could have at least cast a hopeless glance at me, but instead, you walked away even hiding your face from me.
7
Fervent was the longing to visit your street; so now, bathed in blood, from here we depart.
We had an intense longing to visit your street, but now we are departing from here drenched in our own blood.
8
You appeared in such a way that you left me beside myself; departing, you severed me even from my own self.
You appeared in such a manner that you made me completely lose consciousness of myself, and in departing, you severed me even from my own being.
9
My forehead wore away in ceaseless prostration; having paid the debt of devotion, I now take my leave.
My forehead was worn away in constant prostration, and having fulfilled the duty of devotion, I depart.
10
I worshipped you so fervently, O idol, that in the eyes of all, I turned you into God before I took my leave.
O idol (beloved), I worshipped you to such an extent that before departing, I elevated you to the status of God in the eyes of everyone.
11
Just as petals fall and scatter from the rosebush, / even so into the garden of this world we came, and passed away.
Just as flowers fall away from a rosebush, in the very same manner, we arrived in the garden of this world and departed.
12
Thank heavens, I never witnessed the grief of friends; displaying only my own scars, I took my leave.
It is a blessing that I did not have to witness the grief of my friends; I simply departed after showing them my own wounds.
13
A lifetime was spent bound to the craft of the ghazal / And so we depart, having raised this art to such great heights.
An entire lifetime was spent absorbed in the contemplation and craft of the ghazal, and so we depart after elevating this art to great heights.
14
What answer could we give if someone asks of us, O Mir: You came into this world, but what have you achieved before you depart?
O Mir, what answer could we possibly give if someone asks us what we actually accomplished in this world before leaving it?
