Ghazal
jab apne paas wo aaraam-e-jaan nahin hota
This ghazal portrays the consuming anguish of separation and the pervasive sorrow felt in every corner of the heart when the beloved is absent. It deeply reflects the lover's vulnerable longing against the beloved's cold indifference and prideful unresponsiveness.

جب اپنے پاس وہ آرامِ جاں نہیں ہوتا
تو دردِ دل میں، جگر میں کہاں نہیں ہوتا؟
When that solace of my soul is not by my side, where in the heart, where in the spirit, does the ache not reside?
When that comfort of the soul is not by one's side, there is no part of the heart or spirit where pain is not felt.

کہا جو میں نے کرم مہرباں نہیں ہوتا
کہا بگڑ کے اجارہ ہے ہاں نہیں ہوتا
When I said, 'O gracious one, your favor is never shown to me,' snapped they in anger, 'Do you hold a monopoly? No, it shall not be!'
When I complained that you never bestow your favor upon me, they snapped in anger asking if I held a monopoly over it, and replied that no, they would not.

کبھی وہ ہو کے خفا مہربان نہیں ہوتا
ترے بنائے کچھ اب اے فغاں نہیں ہوتا
Once turned away in anger, they never show grace again; nothing is mended now by your pleading, O lament of mine!
Once the beloved turns angry, they never show kindness again; therefore, O my lament, nothing can be mended now no matter what you do.

گنوا رہا ہے عجب شیخ عُمر خلوت میں
شریکِ حلقہ پیرِ مغاں نہیں ہوتا
How strangely the Sheikh squanders his life away in solitude / Never joining the circle of the Master of the tavern.
It is strange that the Sheikh is wasting his life away in solitude, instead of joining the gathering of the master of the tavern.

بھرو فضول نہ دم عاشقی کا تم اے دل
جو ضبط آہ بھی تم سے عیاں نہیں ہوتا
O heart, boast not in vain of walking passion's way, when you cannot even keep a single sigh at bay.
O heart, do not boast in vain of being in love when you cannot even restrain or suppress your sighs.

شبِ وصال سحر شام ہی سے رٹتے ہیں
یہ آج کیا ہے کہ وقتِ اذاں نہیں ہوتا
shab-e-visaal sahar shaam hi se ratte hain
ye aaj kya hai ki waqt-e-azaan nahin hota

کہیں بھی راہ میں منزل سے پہلے دم لینا
شعارِ توسنِ عُمرِ رواں نہیں ہوتا
kahin bhi raah mein manzil se pahle dam lena
shiaar-e-tausan-e-umr-e-rawaan nahin hota

غم ان کا اس لئے مرغوب ہے مجھے ناصح
کہ ان کے غم میں غمِ ایں و آں نہیں ہوتا
gham un ka is liye marghoob hai mujhe naaseh
ki un ke gham mein gham-e-een-o-aan nahin hota
9
سکون ہو گا میسر اگر تو زیرِ زمیں
قرارِ دل کو تہِ آسماں نہیں ہوتا
sukoon hoga mayassar agar to zer-e-zameen
qaraar-e-dil ko tah-e-aasmaan nahin hota

جو عشق کے لئے لازم ہے امتحاں دینا
تو روز بھی یوں امتحاں نہیں ہوتا
jo ishq ke liye laazim hai imtihaan dena
to roz bhi yoon imtihaan nahin hota
11
بڑی ہے قدر تری سالکوں میں اے مجذوبؔ
نہ ہو زمانہ اگر قدر داں نہیں ہوتا
badi hai qadr tiri saalikon mein ai majzoob
na ho zamaana agar qadr-daan nahin hota
