To bear the radiant splendor of your truth, I lacked the might; A thousand times I turned my gaze, yet never could endure the sight.
I never had the strength to bear the brilliance of your true beauty; though I looked a thousand times, I could never endure its sight.
2
If in your pleasure even sorrow brings no joy, that life was never truly a life of love.
If one cannot find happiness even in sorrow for the sake of your pleasure, then that life is truly not a life of love.
3
Where was that spirited encounter? I could not even meet myself again; it happened but once, and never thereafter.
That lively meeting never happened again, not even with myself; it took place just once and never occurred after that.
4
Such lovers are we that from the depths of heart and soul, fierce vapors of sorrow arose, yet never did the eye turn dewy.
We are such lovers that intense heat and vapors of sorrow rose from our heart and soul, yet our eyes never grew moist with tears.
5
Hold still, O restless heart, let me love a while; / for who knows if after this we shall ever meet again.
Wait a while, O restless heart, and let me at least love, for who knows whether we will ever meet again after this.
6
Alas, even from my very thought a distance did remain; I tried a thousand ways, yet parity was never attained.
Alas, there always remained a distance between me and my very thought; I tried in a thousand ways, but equality could never be achieved.
7
Why should we pride ourselves on revelry or prayer? Accepted by the Sovereign Lord—it may or may not be.
Why should we pride ourselves on either our revelry or our worship? Ultimately, it is entirely up to the Sovereign (God) whether it is accepted or not.
8
Whether anyone else steps forward or not, I gladly yield my life; who knows if such a glance of favor will ever grace me again.
Whether anyone else steps forward or not, we offer our life, for who knows if such an attentive glance of favor will ever be cast upon us again.
9
With every word and legend, with all of sight and heart; yet even with such grand design, love could not be explained.
Despite using all words, stories, and the full engagement of sight and heart, love could still not be explained even with such elaborate preparation.
10
Heaven forbid, this bleak desolation of love! Even the thought of the beloved brought no bloom.
God forbid, the sadness and dejection of love has reached such a state that even the thought of the beloved brought no joy or freshness to the heart.
11
I even put your glance of grace to the test and saw: In my torments, no lessening was meant to be, and none befell.
I even tested your glance of kindness and favor, but there was no lessening destined for my torments, and none occurred.
12
Someone's intoxicating glance reached out to hold my hand, / Where even my own self-forgetfulness could not keep me company.
Where even my own state of self-forgetfulness could not accompany or support me, someone's intoxicating gaze held my hand.
13
O morning breeze, carry this message of mine to them: / Ever since you departed, neither dawn nor dusk has come.
O morning breeze, convey this message of mine to them: ever since you departed, neither dawn nor dusk has arrived here.
14
Be that as it may, O foolish ascetic, know this:
Even the greatest could not tread love's path without turning heretic.
O foolish ascetic, whatever the case may be, even the greatest of men were unable to commit the complete heresy demanded by love.
15
Far greater than my own constraint is the helplessness they bear: for I at least could heave a sigh, while even a sigh to them was denied.
The helplessness on their side is far greater than my own, for I could at least heave a sigh, while they were not even able to do that.
16
May God keep you safe, O memory of my beloved; without you, this home was never graced with light.
May God keep the thought of my beloved safe and sound; without you, there was never any light in this home.
17
I too had gone, O Jigar, where the beloved's presence shone in grace; / Though they kept inquiring after me, we never spoke face to face.
O Jigar, I too went to the gathering of the beloved, but while they kept inquiring about me from others, no words were actually exchanged between us.
