1
Like a bubble, I draw each breath in witness of my bond with you;
boundless is this droplet's grief at being parted from the sea.
Like a bubble, I claim and uphold my friendship with you; this droplet feels immense grief at being separated from the sea.
2
Captive to you, O friend, are both the lover and beloved alike:
this one bound in a chain of iron, that one in a chain of gold.
O friend, both your lover and beloved are captives; the one is bound in a chain of iron, the other in a chain of gold.
3
The soul's bond with the body is distasteful to me;
in this world the fashion is a friendship of but four short days.
The soul's attachment to the body is disagreeable to me; in this world the custom is only a friendship of four short days.
4
In separation from the beloved, dying and dying, I at last lived out my life;
Forever remained the anguish of the parting of the soul and the body.
Dying again and again in separation from the beloved, I finally lived out my whole life; the grief of the parting of soul and body remained forever.
5
I could not bear my own beggar to stand in need of me;
I turned the bowl of my skull upside down—a beggar's begging cup.
I could not accept that my own supplicant should remain in need, so I turned my skull upside down and made it a beggar's begging bowl.
6
In every direction I behold but faces upon faces—
is this workshop of the Divine some hall of endless mirrors?
In every direction I see nothing but faces upon faces. Is this workshop of God some house of mirrors?
7
Depart, O soul, from this body, that union with the beloved be attained—
For the garden's stroll is the nightingale's reward when at last it is set free.
O soul, leave this body so that union with the beloved may be achieved; just as the nightingale's freedom brings it a stroll in the garden, the soul's release from the body brings it the beloved's embrace.
8
The promise of union with my love is set for the morrow of Resurrection;
yet I have no faith that I shall even reach my grave.
The promise of meeting my beloved is fixed for the Day of Resurrection, but I am not even certain that I will reach my grave.
9
The lover places no trust in the sigh, O friend, at all—
For never yet was any prey brought down by an arrow shot in air.
The lover has no trust at all in his sigh, O friend, for no prey has ever yet been seen brought down by an arrow shot into the air.
10
With beauty's touch the pen of Nature wrought the miracle of Moses,
Turning the henna-tipped fingers into a radiant white hand.
Through beauty, the pen of Nature displayed the miracle of Moses, transforming the henna-tipped fingers into the radiant white hand.
11
Friends say the line carved in stone can never be erased—
so on the idol's feet shall stay the imprint of my brow's embrace.
Friends say that a line carved in stone is never erased, so the mark of my brow rubbing in devotion will forever remain upon the idol's feet.
12
The hearts of friends are broken, shattered deep by this neglect of yours—
For in your kind attention, O beloved, lies the healing balm's effect.
The hearts of friends are badly broken by this; O beloved, your attention has the effect of a healing balm that mends what is shattered.
13
When the heart, pure as a mirror, speaks of love untainted,
Beauty beholds within it the spectacle of its own display.
When the heart, pure as a mirror, speaks of untainted love, beauty beholds within it the spectacle of its own display.
14
Your immaculate purity makes us wring our hands in regret,
Having made the maiden of chastity dance in the garb of piety.
Your immaculate purity makes us wring our hands in regret, having made the maiden of chastity dance in the garb of piety.
15
I have not seen you, yet my passion's fire has recognized you true,
It is but just, O idol mine, that you lay claim to the divine.
I have not seen you, yet Atish has recognized you; O beloved, your claim to divinity is rightly justified.
