Ghazal
Mana-e-dasht-navardi Koi Tadbir Nahin
This ghazal encapsulates the unstoppable fervor of passion and existential wandering, where no worldly restraint can halt the lover's journey through the wilderness. Ghalib depicts the restlessness of love as an inherent whirlpool of desire, rendering all external chains and remedies utterly futile.

No remedy can restrain my roaming through the desert wild; A dizzy whirl spins in my feet, no binding chain has held me bound.
No plan or remedy can prevent me from wandering the desert. There is no chain binding my feet, but rather a dizzying whirl of wanderlust driving them.
2
Longing drives me across such a desert where no path exists save the frozen gaze of a portrait's eye.
My longing makes me wander in such a desert where there is no path forward except the fixed gaze of a portrait's eye.
3
The longing for the ecstasy of pain remains unquenched; the path of fidelity is naught but the keen edge of a sword.
The longing to taste the pleasure of suffering remains unfulfilled, as the path of faithfulness is nothing but the edge of a sword.
4
May the sorrow of eternal despair remain bearable to me; I rejoice that my lament suffers not the indignity of having an effect.
May the sorrow of eternal hopelessness remain bearable to me; I am glad if my cry of pain does not suffer the humiliation of having an effect.
5
The hand scratches at the head wherever the wound begins to mend; the sweet delight of striking stones no words can comprehend.
Wherever the wound on the head begins to heal, one scratches it; the pleasure of being struck by stones is beyond what words can describe.
6
When grace grants license to boldness and insolence, no fault remains save shame at one's offense.
When benevolence itself permits boldness and audacity, then no offense remains except the shame of committing an offense.
7
Ghalib, this is my firm belief, echoing what Nasikh decreed: Truly bereft of art is he who holds no faith in Mir.
Ghalib says that, in agreement with the words of Nasikh, it is his firm belief that whoever does not admire and believe in Mir is himself bereft of artistic talent and understanding.
8
What can I say of Mir's poetic art, O Ghalib? / Whose divan is nothing less than Kashmir's blooming garden.
O Ghalib, how can I describe the state of Mir's poetry, whose collection of verse is nothing less than the garden of Kashmir.
9
In vain does the mirror conceal its snare beneath a veil, for the fairy-born vision can never be ensnared.
The mirror conceals its snare behind a veil in vain, because the fairy-like vision cannot be subdued or captured.
10
Like a rose, my wound too is born a twin unto the spear; not your quiver alone is pregnant with arrows.
Like a flower, my wound too was born as a twin to the spear; it is not as though your quiver alone is pregnant with arrows.
