दिल चुरा कर नज़र चुराई है लुट गए लुट गए दुहाई है
Having stolen my heart, you have averted your eyes; plundered, utterly robbed am I—hear my desperate cries!
You stole my heart and then averted your gaze; I am utterly ruined and robbed, crying out for help.

एक दिन मिल के फिर नहीं मिलते किस क़यामत की ये जुदाई है
Meeting for but a day, they never meet again; what a doomsday of a separation is this!
People meet for just a single day and then never meet again; what an agonizing, doomsday-like separation this is.

ऐ असर कर न इंतिज़ार-ए-दुआ माँगना सख़्त बे-हयाई है
Wait not, O effect, for a prayer to plead; to ask and beg is sheer shamelessness indeed.
O effect, do not wait for a prayer to be uttered, because begging or asking for something is extreme shamelessness.

मैं यहाँ हूँ वहाँ है दिल मेरा ना-रसाई अजब रसाई है
Here am I, while there resides my heart; what a wondrous reach is this failure to reach.
I am here while my heart is there; this failure to reach is indeed a strange kind of reaching.

इस तरह अहल-ए-नाज़ नाज़ करें बंदगी है कि ये ख़ुदाई है
When the graceful flaunt such proud disdain, is this humble servitude or divinity's reign?
If the proud and graceful beloveds flaunt such coquetry, one wonders whether this is humble servitude or a claim to divinity.

पानी पी पी के तौबा करता हूँ पारसाई सी पारसाई है
Gulping water again and again, I vow to repent—what a wondrous piety is this piety of mine!
I repent again and again while drinking water; what an extraordinary piety this is!

वा'दा करने का इख़्तियार रहा बात करने में क्या बुराई है
The choice to make a promise remains entirely your own; What harm could there be in merely speaking?

कब निकलता है अब जिगर से तीर ये भी क्या तेरी आश्नाई है
No longer does the arrow leave my heart; what kind of intimacy is this of yours?

'दाग़' उन से दिमाग़ करते हैं नहीं मालूम क्या समाई है
Even with her, Dagh dares to put on airs; who knows what strange whim has possessed his mind!
Dagh puts on airs and acts haughty even with his beloved; no one knows what strange whim has entered his mind.
