बात मेरी कभी सुनी ही नहीं जानते वो बुरी भली ही नहीं
They never chose to listen to a single word of mine; whether it was good or bad, they never could divine.

दिल-लगी उन की दिल-लगी ही नहीं रंज भी है फ़क़त हँसी ही नहीं

लुत्फ़-ए-मय तुझ से क्या कहूँ ज़ाहिद हाए कम-बख़्त तू ने पी ही नहीं
How can I describe to you, O ascetic, the sweet delight of wine? Alas, you wretched soul, you have never tasted it at all!
O ascetic, how can I describe the pleasure of wine to you; alas, you unfortunate one, you have never even tasted it.

उड़ गई यूँ वफ़ा ज़माने से कभी गोया किसी में थी ही नहीं
Fidelity has vanished from the world in such a way, as though it never had existed in anyone at all.

जान क्या दूँ कि जानता हूँ मैं तुम ने ये चीज़ ले के दी ही नहीं
Why should I surrender my life, when well I know: this is something you take and never return.

हम तो दुश्मन को दोस्त कर लेते पर करें क्या तिरी ख़ुशी ही नहीं
I would have turned even an enemy into a friend, / But what can I do, when it brings no joy to you?

हम तिरी आरज़ू पे जीते हैं ये नहीं है तो ज़िंदगी ही नहीं
We live solely upon the longing for you; without this desire, there is no life at all.

दिल-लगी दिल-लगी नहीं नासेह तेरे दिल को अभी लगी ही नहीं
This affair of the heart is no mere jest, O preacher; your own heart has never yet been struck by love.

'दाग़' क्यूँ तुम को बेवफ़ा कहता वो शिकायत का आदमी ही नहीं
Why would Dagh ever call you faithless? He is simply not a man given to complaint.
