इश्क़ तो मुश्किल है ऐ दिल कौन कहता सहल है

इश्क़ तो मुश्किल है ऐ दिल कौन कहता सहल है
लेक नादानी से अपनी तू ने समझा सहल है
Love is an arduous trial, O heart, who ever called it easy? Yet in your sheer naivety, you presumed it to be easy.
O heart, love is indeed difficult, who says it is easy? Yet out of your own naivety, you considered it to be simple.

गर खुले दिल की गिरह तुझ से तो हम जानें तुझे
ऐ सबा ग़ुंचे का उक़्दा खोल देना सहल है
We would acclaim your art only if you untied the tangled knot of the heart; O morning breeze, unraveling a rosebud is all too easy a task.
O morning breeze, opening a closed bud is a very simple task; we would truly acknowledge your skill only if you could untie the tangled knot of the heart.

हमदमो दिल के लगाने में कहो लगता है क्या
पर छुड़ाना इस का मुश्किल है लगाना सहल है
Tell me, companions, what does it cost to give the heart away? / Yet breaking free is arduous, though falling in love is easy.
Tell me, friends, what does it really take to fall in love? Giving it up is difficult, while falling in love is very easy.

गरचे मुश्किल है बहुत मेरा इलाज-ए-दर्द-ए-दिल
पर जो तू चाहे तो ऐ रश्क-ए-मसीहा सहल है
Though healing my heart's deep ache is an arduous task, yet should you wish it, O envy of the Messiah, it is effortless.
Although curing the pain of my heart is extremely difficult, if you wish it, O envy of the Messiah, it becomes very easy.

है बहुत दुश्वार मरना ये सुना करते थे हम
पर जुदाई में तिरी हम ने जो देखा सहल है
We used to hear that dying was an ordeal hard to bear; yet parted from you, we have found it easy, light as air.
We used to hear that dying is very difficult, but experiencing separation from you made us realize that it is actually easy.

शम्अ ने जल कर जलाया बज़्म में परवाने को
बिन जले अपने जलाना क्या किसी का सहल है

इश्क़ का रस्ता सरासर है दम-ए-शमशीर पर
बुल-हवस इस राह में रखना क़दम क्या सहल है

ऐ 'ज़फ़र' कुछ हो सके तो फ़िक्र कर उक़्बा का तू
कर न दुनिया का तरद्दुद कार-ए-दुनिया सहल है
O Zafar, take heed of the hereafter while you still may; fret not over worldly strife, for the affairs of this world pass easily away.
O Zafar, if you can do anything, worry about the hereafter; do not fret over this world, because worldly affairs are easy and insignificant.
