Ghazal
This ghazal poignantly captures the grief of unfulfilled longing, suppressed tears, and romantic disappointment. It conveys the lover's deep heartache when the beloved's arrival is averted at the last moment, leaving the heartfelt desire for ultimate self-sacrifice painfully trapped within.

Just as the deluge was about to pour, my weeping eyes held back today; at last, O cloud of spring, your honor was spared and saved this way.
Today, tears were just about to pour from my eyes but held back; in this way, O cloud of spring, your honor was saved.

Just as their procession turned towards me, it stopped short and stayed away; locked within the heart, the wish to sacrifice my life was left to stay.
Their procession came close to this side but stopped short, and the longing to sacrifice my life for them remained unfulfilled in my heart.

I was in dread, for rumors spread quite a different tale;
Yet by the coming of your letter, my word did still prevail.
I was anxious because different rumors were circulating among the people, but the arrival of your letter preserved my word and honor.

Into shattered pieces shall fly the stone upon my grave, if even a trace of restlessness lingers in the heart after death.
If even a little restlessness remains in the heart after death, the entire gravestone will shatter into pieces and blow away.

Mingle so deeply with the dust that in the dust they seek your trace, / If only the self-effacement of dust can keep its humble grace.
Mix so completely with the dust that anyone looking for you must search for you in the dust, provided that the humility of the dust itself truly remains intact.
6
Come if you must come, why tread with such counted, hesitant paces? Only for a few moments more does the counting of my dying breaths remain.
Come if you wish to come, why do you tread with such slow, hesitant steps? My remaining breaths are now numbered and will last only for a few moments.

From the day dominion over my heart became their own, all my control departed, and helplessness remained alone.
Ever since they gained control over my heart, I lost all power over myself and only helplessness remained.
8
The moment my steps advanced toward that cruel, faithless love, I journeyed far ahead, while piety was left a hundred paces behind.
The moment my steps advanced toward that cruel and faithless beloved, I went far ahead while piety was left a hundred paces behind.

No sooner was the sword of grace unsheathed than my breath vanished like the wind; alas, within my heart, the longing for a mortal wound remained.
As soon as the beloved drew the sword of grace, my life vanished into the air; alas, the desire to receive a fatal wound remained unfulfilled in my heart.

All other comforters have ceased their comforting; now only grief is left to solace grief.
All other sympathizers have finished offering their comfort; now, only sorrow itself remains to console my sorrow.

To complain of friends' deceit is quite justified, O Zafar; in this age, this alone is all that remains of friendship's custom.
O Zafar, it is entirely justified to complain about the deceit of friends, because in this day and age, this is the only tradition of friendship that remains.
