बुरी और भली सब गुज़र जाएगी
ये कश्ती यूँही पार उतर जाएगी
Both the good and the bad, all shall pass away; somehow this boat will reach the other shore.
All times, whether good or bad, will eventually pass, and this boat of life will somehow reach the other shore.

मिलेगा न गुलचीं को गुल का पता
हर इक पंखुड़ी यूँ बिखर जाएगी
No trace of the rose shall the flower-gatherer find; so completely will every petal scatter.
The flower-gatherer will find no trace of the rose, because every single petal will scatter away in such a manner.

रहेंगे न मल्लाह ये दिन सदा
कोई दिन में गंगा उतर जाएगी
These days will not endure forever, O boatman; in a matter of days, the Ganga's tide shall surely recede.
O boatman, these days will not remain forever; within a few days, the waters of the Ganga will recede.

इधर एक हम और ज़माना उधर
ये बाज़ी तो सो बिसवे हर जाएगी
Here stand I alone, with the world on the other side; this wager, beyond all doubt, is bound to be lost.
On one side I am alone and on the other side is the entire world; this game is absolutely bound to be lost.

बनावट की शेख़ी नहीं रहती शैख़
ये इज़्ज़त तो जाएगी पर जाएगी
Pretensions and false boasts cannot endure, O Sheikh; this honor of yours is bound to go, and go it surely will.
O Sheikh, false pride and pretensions do not last; this honor of yours is bound to disappear, and disappear it surely will.

न पूरी हुई हैं उमीदें न हों
यूँही उम्र सारी गुज़र जाएगी
Neither have hopes been fulfilled, nor shall they ever be; and just like this, an entire lifetime will pass away.
Hopes have neither been fulfilled so far nor will they ever be, and just like this, the entire life will pass away.

सुनेंगे न 'हाली' की कब तक सदा
यही एक दिन काम कर जाएगी
How long will they refuse to hear Hali's plea? One day, this very cry will surely leave its mark.
How long will people refuse to hear Hali's voice? One day, this very call will surely have its effect.
