Akbar Allahabadi· Ghazal· 8 shers· radif: होता

This ghazal explores the anguish of love and the fickle nature of the beloved and the world, identifying the heart itself as the ultimate source of all suffering.
Had the heart known the beloved's ever-shifting, fickle art, the world's double-dealing would never have grieved the heart.
If the heart had been aware of the beloved's fickle and changing nature, it would never have grieved over the double-dealing of the world.

Bound to misery, it is by this heart that I remain constrained; / Else life would pass in tranquil peace—had I no heart, no grief remained.
We remain trapped in misery only because of this heart; otherwise, life would have passed peacefully if there were no heart and no sorrow.
3
Day and night, it is the sting of their faithlessness I bear; had they been within my sway, what sorrow would be there?
I suffer the shock of their betrayal all day and night; if only they were in my control, why would there be any sorrow at all?
4
Had poets ever caught a glimpse of the beloved's lips and eyes, one would turn sweet-spoken, the other write enchanted lines.
If poets had ever been able to see the beloved's lips and eyes, one would have become sweet-spoken and another would have written magical poetry.
5
It is well indeed they did not come to ask after my despair; had they come, the rivals would come, and that would be grief to bear.
It is very good that they did not come to visit me in my illness; had they come, rivals would have accompanied them, and their presence would have caused me grief.
6
Had I not beheld the graves of Darius and Alexander, I too would have yearned for wealth, status, and regal splendor.
If I had not seen the graves of mighty rulers like Darius and Alexander, I too would have harbored a desire for wealth, rank, and worldly grandeur.
7
The fervor of longing bears me along the path of love; else, from sheer frailty, taking even two steps would be too hard.
It is only the fervor of longing that carries me along the path of love; otherwise, due to extreme weakness, walking even two steps would have been difficult.
8
Thank heavens no chinks remained within the walls, else what a plight: / To you it would be playful jest, but for the poor, a cruel spite.
It is a relief that no openings were left in the walls; otherwise, it would have been mere amusement for you, but pure cruelty to the poor.
