Prove true your love for this enemy of faith at last—
but make no haste of heart, for haste is Satan's craft.
Prove true your love for this enemy of faith, but do not let your heart rush, for haste is the work of Satan.
2
I would deem false the words of this idle, prattling tongue of mine—
Yet should it bear report of Him, let it speak as the Qur'an's line.
I would consider the words of this idly prattling tongue to be false; yet if it speaks of Him, let its words be taken as true as the Qur'an.
3
Then what hope of life can rest upon this life of ours;
Then our very soul found its trust in the soul itself.
Then what hope of life remains upon this life of ours; then our very soul came to place its trust in the soul itself.
4
The lament that rose from my desire-filled heart in love
Was a figure shaped from head to foot of longing and despair.
The cry that emerged from my desire-filled heart in love was a figure fashioned, from head to foot, out of longing and despair.
5
Within my breast, stirred by the fervor of our love, it came to be—
the blade-tip's temper, turned a fish that swims a river of blood in me.
In my breast, through the fervor of love, the gleam of your arrow's tip became a fish swimming in a river of blood.
6
What angels do, a mortal man can do as well;
But what no angel can—that is the work of man.
Whatever angels do, a human being can also do; but that which no angel is able to do—that is truly the work of man.
7
Such is the fever's fury of grief upon this sick soul of yours,
that even days of respite become, for him, the crisis of his illness.
The fever of grief rages so fiercely upon this sick lover of yours that even the days meant for his rest and relief turn into the crisis-days of his malady.
8
Let death not trouble this one—what will it achieve by coming?
I was already slain, long since, by the pride of a certain someone.
Let death not trouble this one—what can it accomplish by coming? I have already been slain, long before, by someone's pride and airs.
9
How can one with a stained garment ever be called pure of robe—
O Zulaikha, let go the garment of Yusuf of Canaan.
One whose garment is stained can never be called pure of robe; so O Zulaikha, let go of the garment of Yusuf of Canaan.
10
Let the worthless self gain but a little power,
then behold the claim of a destitute Pharaoh.
If a worthless, base self gains even a little power, then see how a resourceless Pharaoh begins to make lofty claims of divinity.
11
Behold, O Zauq, today again a hundred thousand hearts shall bleed—
For once more she has pressed the betel-leaf against her crimson lips.
Look, O Zauq, today again countless people will be slain, for once more she has chewed betel-leaf upon her lips.
