इस महीना भर कहाँ था साक़िया अच्छी तरह

इस महीना भर कहाँ था साक़िया अच्छी तरह
आ इधर आ ईद तो मिल लें ज़रा अच्छी तरह
Where have you been all this past month, O cupbearer, tell me true? Come here, come close, let us embrace for Eid properly anew.
O cupbearer, where were you throughout this whole month? Come over here so that we can embrace properly and greet each other for Eid.

उँगलियाँ कानों में रख कर ऐ मुसाफ़िर सुन ज़रा
आ रही है साफ़ आवाज़-ए-दरा अच्छी तरह
Stop your ears with your fingers, O traveler, and listen well: clear and distinct rings the toll of the caravan's bell.
O traveler, put your fingers in your ears and listen closely; the sound of the caravan's bell can be heard clearly.

चश्म-ए-मूसा ला सकी इक उस के जल्वे की न ताब
चश्म-ए-दिल से जिस को देखा बार-हा अच्छी तरह
The eye of Moses could not endure the radiance of a single manifestation, yet through the eye of the heart, I have beheld Him time and again, so clearly.
Moses's physical eye could not endure the intensity of even a single manifestation of His divine radiance, yet I have clearly witnessed Him time and again through the eye of the heart.

फ़ासला ऐसा नहीं कुछ अर्श की ज़ंजीर से
क्या कहूँ बढ़ता नहीं दस्त-ए-दुआ अच्छी तरह
The chain of Heaven's highest throne is not so far away; / What can I say? This hand of prayer fails to stretch out properly.
The chain of Heaven's divine throne is not very far away, but what can I say—my hand of prayer simply does not reach out properly.

अहल-ए-सूरत को नहीं है अच्छी सीरत से ग़रज़
अच्छी सूरत चाहिए अच्छी अदा अच्छी तरह
Those who seek mere outward form care nothing for inner grace; All they desire are charming airs, and a truly lovely face.
Those obsessed with external appearance have no concern for inner character; they only desire a beautiful face and charming ways thoroughly.

शाहिदान-ए-लाला-ओ-गुल की ख़बर लाई है कुछ
साल भर के ब'अद आई ऐ सबा अच्छी तरह
Have you brought some news of those beauties, the tulip and rose? Welcome indeed, O morning breeze, arrived in full grace as a whole year closes.
O morning breeze, you have arrived properly after a whole year; have you brought any news of the beauties that are the tulip and the rose?

सीख लेगी बल की लेना ता-कमर आने तो दो
बल अभी करती नहीं ज़ुल्फ़-ए-दोता अच्छी तरह
Let them reach down to her waist, they will learn each artful twist; as yet, these braided tresses have not learned to truly curl.
Let her braided locks grow down to her waist first, and then they will learn how to twist and curl; right now, these tresses do not know how to curl properly.

शीशा-ओ-जाम-ओ-सुबू भर ले मय-ए-गुल-रंग से
आज साक़ी घिर के आई है घटा अच्छी तरह
Fill every flask, goblet, and flagon with rose-hued wine; today, O Saqi, the dark rain-clouds have gathered in full splendor.
O cupbearer, fill the flask, cup, and flagon with rose-coloured wine, for today the dark rain clouds have gathered thoroughly.

लेते हैं अहल-ए-जुनूँ क्या क्या तसव्वुर के मज़े
आँख से परियों को देखा बार-हा अच्छी तरह
What wondrous joys of fantasy the crazed lovers prize; / Full many a time they have beheld the fairies with their eyes.
Mad lovers enjoy the immense pleasures of imagination so deeply that they feel they have seen fairies clearly with their own eyes many times.

दे रही है उस की ख़ामोशी सदा-ए-दूर-बाश
ये नहीं कहता कि 'नज़्म'-ए-मुब्तला अच्छी तरह
Her silence itself rings out the herald's cry to stay away; I do not say the stricken lover's state is faring well.
Her silence sounds a warning cry to keep one's distance, and I do not claim that the afflicted Nazm is doing well.
