In mere jest I spoke that word which left you stunned and pale; the secret hidden in the heart was betrayed by the flush upon your face.
I casually said that thing in jest which left you completely stunned, and the secret hidden in the heart was revealed by the changing color of your face.

My halts and journeys ever served as a guide upon the Mystic Way: when I paused, I stood as a milestone; when I moved, the ringing music of a harp.
My moving and halting have always guided others on the spiritual path; when I paused, I became a milestone, and when I moved, I became the inspiring sound of a harp.

Had you not shattered the looking-glass, so many Yusufs would not appear; becoming the caravan's bell, the broken mirror drew this entire caravan near.
If you had not broken the mirror, so many Yusufs would not have appeared; the shattering of the mirror, acting as a caravan bell, has drawn this entire caravan here.

The coming and going of youth and age is a tale of piercing grief: one stayed behind as the dust of longing, the other fled like the blush from the cheek.
The passing of youth and the arrival of old age is an immensely painful story; old age remained behind like the dust of regret, while youth flew away like color vanishing from the face.

Once a secret passed from heart to tongue, no restraint could hold it back again; it flew from the lips as spoken words, like an arrow loosed from a bow.
Once a secret leaves the heart and reaches the tongue, it can no longer be controlled; it escapes the mouth as spoken words just like an arrow released from a bow.

How dire is the tide of oblivion's sea, entangling and dashing me down— / Each breath wove a net of rising waves, the grave became a sea-monster's jaws.
The current of the sea of mortality is dreadful, which entangled and destroyed me; my breaths wove a net like waves, and the grave became the jaws of a sea monster.

Gifted with a wild, unrestrained heart, why should I defer to anyone? / Lest the solemn preacher himself, driven to wit's end, tear his collar in despair.
Since I have been gifted an unrestrained and reckless heart, why should I care about anyone? I fear that even the preacher, frustrated with my ways, might tear his own collar in despair.

If he shatters the wine-flask this time, swords shall clash with the censor's hand; / Behold how the revellers' blood will flow, turned to tulip-red wine across the land.
If the moral censor breaks the wine-flask this time, swords will be drawn against him; then watch how the blood of the revellers too will flow like tulip-red wine.

Neither did restraint let complaint reach my lips, nor patience allow a sigh to rise; it locked my mouth in silence, then crushed upon my chest like heavy stone.
Self-restraint did not let any complaint reach the lips, nor did patience allow a sigh to be drawn; it remained as a lock upon the mouth and weighed down on the chest like a heavy stone.

If the Sufi would but grasp this subtle truth—that existence is a mystic concert of ecstatic song—then these nine sky-bowls would ring out at once, chiming like a jal-tarang.
If the Sufi understands the subtle point that existence is a gathering of mystical music, then these nine bowls of the sky would instantly begin to play like a jal-tarang.

Bless this melancholy of heart, which kept my wild desires suppressed; by standing guard over honor and shame, it spared me from wandering in disgrace.
Thank goodness for the heart's melancholy which kept unfulfilled desires suppressed; by safeguarding my honor and shame, it saved me from disgrace and wandering in vain.
12
My nails found no respite from tearing the heart, nor from raking the chest; / Weary of madness's wild uproar, the collar itself choked the throat.
The fingernails found no respite from scratching the liver or tearing open the chest. Weary of the turmoil of madness, the collar itself strangled the throat.

Assuming a hundred disguises, the world frightened one and tempted another; appearing sometimes as a decrepit crone, and at times as a playful, coquettish idol.
By adopting hundreds of disguises, the world frightened and tempted humanity, appearing sometimes as a decrepit old woman and at other times as a playful, coquettish beauty.

Having drawn your sword and risen, you should not have hesitated so; for the longing in my heart was martyred merely by the blade of your delay.
When you had already drawn your sword and risen to strike, you should not have hesitated. Because of your delay, the longing in my heart to be slain by you remained unfulfilled and perished merely from waiting.

All ardent passions were smothered, O Haidar, amid a crowd of excuses and delay; all bold resolves remained confined to the heart, reduced to sorrow and hesitation.
O Haidar, all the enthusiasm was suppressed amidst endless excuses and indecision, and all the courage remained confined within the heart as regret and hesitation.
