देखकर गिरती गले में सब्ज़ धानी आप की
धान के भी खेत ने आपान मानी आप की
Beholding the green-golden scarf slip down and grace your throat,
Even the paddy field conceded that it bowed to you, your note.
Seeing the green-golden scarf slip down upon your throat, even the paddy field admitted that it conceded defeat before you.

क्या तअज्जुब हो अगर देखे तो मुर्दा जी उठे
चीन नेफ़े की डुमक पेड़ू पे आनी आप की
What wonder would it be if the dead should rise to life again—
that fold of your waistband's curve, that swell upon your gentle belly.
It would be no wonder if even the dead came back to life upon seeing the fold of your waistband's curve and the swell upon your lower belly.

हो तो क्या हैं दिल फ़रिश्ते का भी काफ़िर छीन ले
टुक छमक खुल के फिर अंगिया पे छाती आप की
Even an angel's heart—what of it?—the infidel would seize it whole;
Sway but a little, let it show, your bosom above the bodice, open to the soul.
Even if it were an angel's heart, so what—that infidel would snatch it away; when you sway a little and open up, and your bosom gleams above the bodice.

आ पड़े दो सौ बरस के मुर्दा-ए-बेजान में जान
जिसके ऊपर दो घड़ी हो मेहरबानी आप की
Into a lifeless corpse of two hundred years, life would come pouring back,
upon whom, for but two brief moments, your kindness chanced to fall.
Even a lifeless corpse dead for two hundred years would come back to life, if only for two brief moments your kindness were to fall upon it.

इक लपट कुश्ती की हमसे भी तो कर देखो ज़रा
हां भला हम भी तो जानें पहलवानी आप की
Just come and grapple one quick bout of wrestling here with me—
Yes, let me also get to know this champion's craft you claim to be.
Come and try one bout of wrestling with me too, so that I may also discover and judge the wrestling skill you boast of.

देखो कहना मानो मत ख़ाली सलाई से रखो
वर्ना कोसेगी हमें ये सुरमा-दानी आप की
Look, heed my word—don't leave the applicator bare and dry,
or else this kohl-pot of yours will curse us, you and I
Look, listen to what I say—do not keep the applicator empty and without kohl, otherwise this kohl-pot of yours will curse us.

छल्ले ग़ैरों पास तो वो ख़ातम ज़रा-ए-निगार
है हमारे पास भी अबतक निशानी आप की
If rings have passed to strangers' hands, that gem-engraved ring you wore—
I too still keep a keepsake of you with me evermore.
If that engraved ring has passed into strangers' hands, I too still hold a keepsake of you with me until now.

वक़्त तो जाता रहा पर बात बाक़ी रह गई
है ये छूटी दोस्ती अब हमने जानी आप की
The time has passed away, yet still the matter lingers on;
This broken friendship now has taught me who you truly are.
Time kept passing by, yet the matter remained unfinished; through this broken friendship I have now come to know who you really are.

हमने भेजा तुमको तुम कहते हो यां पहुंचा नहीं
खा गई शायद वो कुटनी मीर जानी आप की
I sent it off to you, yet you declare it never came to hand;
That go-between, perhaps, devoured your very soul, dear Mir.

एक शब ऐ जान-ए-जां घर में सहर बीजाईए
हाल पर बंदे के होगी मेहरबानी आप की
One night, O soul of my soul, let dawn break within my home—
upon this humble servant's plight your kindness would be shown.
O soul of my soul, spend one night in my home until dawn breaks; such kindness upon this servant's condition would be your favour.

क्या अजब सूरत रक़ीब-ए-रू-सियह की देखकर
ख़ौफ़ से हालत हुई हो पानी पानी आप की
What wonder if, beholding the black-faced rival's loathsome face,
you melted into water, water, from the dread that gripped your heart.
It would be no wonder if, upon seeing the black-faced rival's face, your condition turned to water, water, out of the fear that seized you.

एक आलम कोहकन की तरह सर फोड़ेगा अब
गर इसी सूरत रही शीरीं-ज़बानी आप की
A whole world will now, like Kohkan, dash its head against the stone,
If this sweetness of your tongue continues to be so.
If the sweetness of your speech continues like this, then now a whole world will smash its head against the stone, just as Kohkan (Farhad) did.

क्या हमें लगती हो प्यारी जब वो कहती हो नज़ीर
हो मियां कुछ इन दिनों ना-मेहरबानी आप की
How dear you seem to us, Nazeer, when thus you say to me,
"These days, my friend, it seems you show no kindness unto me."
O Nazeer, you seem dear to us when she says that these days, my friend, you show some unkindness.
