The night of union left me from the eve,
the pangs of parting turned to grief I grieve.
The night of union slipped away from the evening, and the state of separation became a torment.
2
The heart I did not guard, the soul alone stayed, O God—
This much I did not know: that one, he went away somewhere.
I failed to guard my heart; only the soul remained, O God. This I never knew—that he had gone away somewhere.
3
Rise swiftly, for I am slipping away, drop by drop;
Look, not only the heart but the very garden has drained to its depths.
Rise quickly, for I am slipping away drop by drop; look, not only the heart but the whole garden has emptied to its very depths.

My days turned black and dark, for that candle-faced one
Came at dusk and by dawn was gone.
My days became black and dark, because that candle-faced beloved came at dusk and departed by dawn.
5
My fortune is reversed—what deer, what gazelle of mine?
From the land of nothingness no deer has ever turned back.
My fortune has turned against me—what deer or gazelle remains to me? From the land of nothingness no deer has ever returned.
6
Just look at the excuse for not walking along with me—
There, ahead of my bier, he fell fast asleep.
Just look at his excuse for not walking along with me—he fell fast asleep ahead of my bier.
7
I am the mark of my slayer's playful mischief—
all the while she kept asking: what has happened here?
I am the target of my slayer's playful mischief, while she kept asking all along what had happened here.
8
No patience left this evening of our parting today—
by God, you were so weary that you drifted off to sleep.
No patience remains this evening of parting today—by God, you were so weary that you fell asleep.
9
Thankful I was, though enemies would chide and blame; / my lament—did it work for me, or did it merely weep in vain?
I was thankful, though my enemies would complain and blame me; but did my lament ever serve my purpose, or did it only weep in vain?
10
The fragrance of her tresses shall come to me, perhaps— / yet to the rival's cruel hand the bunch of evening-blooms is gone.
Perhaps the fragrance of her tresses will reach me, but the bunch of evening-blooming flowers has gone into the rival's cruel hand.
11
"Alas, beloved! Alas, beloved!" — why upon your lips these words?
O pious Momin, tell me, what has come over you?
"Alas, beloved! Alas, beloved!" — why are these words upon your lips? O pious Momin, what has come over you?
