1
My wonder-struck eyes made a spectacle of it all,
For a long, long while that one kept gazing at me.
My astonished eyes made a spectacle, and for a long time that one kept gazing at me.
2
Restraining my laments once bore some fruit indeed—
what courage I summoned, and what I did not, what deeds!
At times holding back my cries did have its effect; what great courage I mustered, and what I refrained from doing—what did I achieve!
3
Because my eyes found no sleep at all,
every friend spoke of my falling in love.
Because my eyes found no sleep at all, every friend talked about my having fallen in love.
4
I died upon those life-bestowing lips of hers—
so I myself have wrought my own remedy at last.
I died upon her life-giving lips, and thus I myself carried out my own cure.
5
In a single sigh the candle of my life was snuffed away;
it was my own cold breath that chilled me into death's dismay.
In a single sigh the candle of life was extinguished; it was my own cold breath that made me cold.
6
They would have taken ill a rival's visit to my sickbed—
by slaying me, they did a kindly thing instead.
They would have resented a rival coming to visit me in my illness, so by killing me they did a good thing.
7
Behold the veil-concealer—let someone gaze on them; it was my own sense of shame that brought disgrace on me.
Let someone behold that veil-concealing one; it was my own shame that disgraced me.
8
Life, in separation, was a death itself—
what Messiah's work has death now done!
Living in separation was like being dead; so death performed the work of the Messiah by granting release from that suffering life.
9
Whence this crimson hue upon your lips of betel-leaf?
You have laid claim, it seems, to the blood that once was mine.
Where did this red colour in your betel come from? It seems you have laid claim to my blood.
10
I won't complain of cruelty—that too is tyranny;
my patience has betrayed the secret hidden deep in me.
I do not complain of the cruelty done to me, for complaining is itself a kind of tyranny; yet my very patience has exposed the secret I kept hidden within.
11
Nothing at all comes right now, what is there to do?
Her falling out with me has wrought such ruin anew.
Nothing at all turns out right now, what can be done? Her falling out with me has caused such ruin that everything is spoiled.
12
My very life was slipping away for your sake—
why then did I vainly reproach my rival?
My very life was departing for your sake—so why did I needlessly complain about my rival?
13
The mercy of the heavens, and upon my plight—
you showed me grace, O cruel tormentor of mine.
The mercy of the heavens, and upon my plight—you showed me grace, O cruel tormentor of mine.
14
Granted, true indeed is your pledge of faithfulness—
yet when did death ever promise a tomorrow?
Granted your pledge of faithfulness is true, but when did death ever promise a tomorrow?
15
With his plea of suffering, the executioner
On Judgment Day once more has slain his own self.
With his plea of inflicting suffering, the executioner on the Day of Judgment once again slew his own self.
16
Death has hidden its face within the parting's veil—
behold, I have unveiled that cloistered one at last.
Death has hidden its face within the veil of separation; behold, at last I have unveiled that cloistered one's face.
17
True, the idol is ever the believer's foe—
what has my very name done unto me?
True, the idol has ever been the believer's enemy—what has my own name done to me?
