वो तुख़्म-ए-सोख़्ता थे हम कि सर-सब्ज़ी न की हासिल
मिलाया ख़ाक में दाना नमत हसरत से दहक़ाँ को
— Mir Taqi Mir
Meaning
We were seeds of withered wood, incapable of flourishing with greenery; we scattered grains in the dust, a gift born of yearning and laughter.
Explanation
This poignant couplet speaks of unfulfilled potential and the pain of effort that yields no reward. Mir Taqi Mir says that we were like seeds of barren soil, unable to blossom. Despite this inherent limitation, we still planted a seed in the dust, nurturing it with the deepest yearning and hope. It is a powerful lament about trying your absolute best, even when the circumstances or the self are not ready for success.
