1
How could I mark my heart with scars, like the tulip's crimson stain?
How could I brim this cup of mine to the lip with my own blood's rain?
How could I cover my heart with scars like the tulip's dark mark, and how could I fill a cup to the brim with my own blood?
2
Not everyone found fruit upon his chosen way;
If the tulip wore not its tilted crown, what else could it do?
The upright cypress gained no fruit from its straightness; if the tulip did not wear its tilted cap, what else could it have done.
3
Alone I passed along love's blood-soaked path, apart from all,
Why argue of my lament with the caravan's bell's call?
I passed alone along love's blood-soaked path, separate from everyone. Why would I debate my lament with the caravan's bell?
4
In love's wild frenzy no distinction could remain—
how could the chakor make the moon's halo a collar round its throat?
In the madness of love no distinction remained; how could the chakor bird turn the moon's halo into a collar around its throat.
5
What was left for me to break once I had broken the river's cup—
having taken the bubble, what would I do with this empty goblet?
Once I had broken the river's own cup, what remained for me to break? Having taken the bubble, what use would I have for this empty goblet?
6
I never swallowed the anger served from fate's own tray;
that morsel stuck within my throat—what could I do with it?
I never swallowed the anger served from fate's tray; that morsel stuck in my throat—what could I do with it?
7
The cold of camphor turned to deadly scourge from these scars I bear;
what kindly dealing could the hailstorm show to tender crops laid bare?
The coolness of camphor became a deadly affliction because of these scars; how could the hailstorm ever do any kindly deed to the crops.
8
I gave no written deed to that idol in the breaking of my heart—
how could I draw up a title-deed to the house of God itself?
I handed no written deed over to that idol when my heart was breaking—how could I ever draw up a title-deed to the very house of God?
9
No austerity could cleanse the carnal, commanding self—
how could anyone wash away a dog's defilement?
Even spiritual discipline could not purify the commanding, carnal self; how could anyone ever remove the impurity of a dog?
10
When the blanket caught fire, did you ever fling it off?
O naked one, what could the warmth of a shawl have done for you?
When the blanket caught fire, did you ever fling it away? O naked one, what use was the warmth of a shawl to you?
11
Had not the intellect roamed through the seven heavens,
who would have cared for this slender tract of paper's leaves?
Had the intellect not journeyed through the seven heavens, no one would have bothered to keep this few-paged tract with them.
12
Had the heart's own pull been drawing them toward me,
why would I hand the idols over to the brahmins' care?
Had the heart's own attraction been pulling them toward me, why would I have handed the idols over to the brahmins' keeping?
13
No one inquired the price of this shattered heart of mine—
who would ever buy a broken cup, and what would they do with it?
No one even asked the price of the broken heart; after all, who would buy a broken cup and what use would it be to them.
14
From the bride of this world no scent of faithfulness ever comes;
so tell me, what remedy could I have found for this?
From the bride that is this world no fragrance of faithfulness ever comes; so what remedy or cure could I possibly have made for it.
15
Had a drunken companion been there, what joy it would have been, Aatish — / for alone, what was I to do with that two-year-aged wine?
Had there been a tipsy companion, it would have been a delight, O Aatish; drinking that two-year-old wine all alone, what was I to do with it?
