Veiled in secrecy, love became a mortal enemy; / What scourge of God is this, O hidden longing, upon me?
Veiled in secrecy, love has turned into a mortal enemy; O hidden longing, what divine affliction or curse is this that has struck me?

What deep regret was mine from bargaining away my heart to them; for where remains the value of a thing once it has become so cheap?
I felt immense regret after bargaining away my heart to them, for where does any value remain for a thing that has become so cheap and easily available?
4
For two days now that playful grace has graced my home as guest; how utterly has solitude's own house been laid to waste!
For the past two days, that playful beloved has been a guest at my house, because of which the home of my loneliness and helplessness has been completely ruined.
5
Regret lingers on both sides for the severing of our ties; was the folly mine, or was the foolishness yours?
There is sorrow on both sides over the ending of our relationship; it remains unclear whether this mistake was made by us or by you.
6
From beginning to end, I could reveal my state to her; yet I dread the deep regret that might follow once it is spoken.
I could tell them my entire state from beginning to end, but the worry is what if I regret it after speaking.
7

O preacher, it is not the dread of Judgment Day that troubles me; my worry is: how shall faith endure once this mortal world ceases to be?
O preacher, I am not worried about the Day of Judgment; my concern is that if the world itself is mortal, how can faith remain?
8
That you will not come tonight is a certainty firmly known; that you will not heed my word is a truth already accepted.
I am completely certain that you will not come tonight, and it is an already accepted truth that you will not listen to me.
9
As long as breath lingered in me, my caregivers suffered strain; with my ease came ease to all, and relief did my friends attain.
As long as life remained in me, my caregivers were in hardship; when death brought ease to me, it brought relief to all my friends as well.
10
What do you call this irony? My longing for union grew all the more, / The more renowned became the unblemished chastity she bore.
What is this called, that my desire for union increased all the more, in direct proportion to how renowned her chastity became.
11
Leaving the assembly wounds my pride, yet staying stirs bitter envy; seeing that crowd of rivals around you, what deep torment overtook me!
Leaving the gathering wounds my self-respect, while staying there fills my heart with jealousy; seeing the crowd of rivals caused me immense distress.
12

Upon my boast of subduing her, that fairy-like beauty quipped: What makes your heart believe it is the Seal of Solomon?
When I claimed that I would subdue and win her over, that fairy-faced beloved quipped, asking whether my heart had become the Seal of Solomon that it could command anyone.
13
The tresses of that playful beauty, drunk on coquetry, must have come undone; for the morning breeze now wanders swaying about, utterly intoxicated.
Perhaps the locks of that playful and coquettish beloved have opened, for the morning breeze is wandering about, swaying in intoxication.
14
Gladly would I bow at her threshold in eager devotion; why did my frame, from head to toe, not turn to a forehead alone?
I would have eagerly prostrated myself completely at their threshold; why did my entire body from head to foot not become solely a forehead?
15
How could one ever believe the heart's essence has changed? When has wind ever turned to dust, or fire become water?
How could anyone believe that the true nature or essence of the heart has changed? When has air ever turned into dust, or fire ever become water?

No sooner do you arrive than you say you must head home—well said, indeed! Truly, the proverb holds full sway here: one's own whim becomes the household rule.
You have just arrived and are already saying you must go home, which is quite something. Here, the proverb has come completely true: doing whatever you please, as if it were your own house.

Let me but seek and find you on the Plain of Reckoning; can a face so intimately known ever stay hidden?
Just let me search and find you on the plain of the Day of Judgment; after all, can a face that is so well-known ever remain hidden?
18
Even seeing the slayer's empty hand, my heart was seized with dread; the mere fold upon his sleeve became a grim furrow on his brow.
Even seeing the killer's empty hand, my heart was terrified; the crease on his sleeve seemed to me like a grim frown upon his forehead.
19
Deceived by their gleam, that youthful idol gathered them in her hem; even the weeping of my tears became a scattering of pearls.
Deceived by mistake, that young beloved gathered my tears in her hem thinking they were pearls, and thus even my weeping turned into the scattering of gems.

We are moved to sorrow by the utter helplessness of 'Dagh'—in what place, and at what ill-fated hour, was his home brought to ruin?
We feel profound pity for the helplessness of Dagh; one wonders at what place and at what ill-fated moment his home and life were utterly ruined.
