Ghazal
This ghazal captures the poet's intense longing and imagined ecstasy of union with the beloved, where heart and life would gladly be sacrificed in devotion. Simultaneously, it poignantly conveys deep helplessness over having no influence or control over the indifferent beloved's heart.

How wondrous my state would be, were there union with the beloved; at times my life would be sacrificed, at times my heart surrendered.
If union with the beloved had been granted, wondrous would my state have been; at times my life would be sacrificed for them, and at times my heart would be offered.

No turmoil would ever arise again until the Day of Doom, / If only, O cruel one, I held sway over your heart.
O cruel one, if only I had control over your heart, no mischief or turmoil would ever manifest until the Day of Judgment.
3
Had someone made false promises to you, just as you do to me, / Tell me in all fairness—would you have believed them true?
If someone had made false promises to you just like you do, tell me in all fairness, would you have trusted them?
4
There was delight in the grief of love, had it been savored with understanding keen; this is that poison which in the end, a sweet and pleasant wine would have been.
There would have been pleasure in the grief of love if only it had been consumed with understanding; this is a poison that ultimately would turn into pleasant wine.
5
Such would be the delight of love's game had the flame burned equally in both hearts: neither would you find any peace, nor would I know any rest.
The true fun of this love affair would have been if the fire burned equally on both sides, so that neither you had any peace nor I found any rest.
6
There is no thrill in enmity, nor any joy in friendship's bond; if only a stranger were truly a stranger, and a friend truly a friend.
There is neither any pleasure in enmity nor any joy in friendship; it would be better if a stranger were truly a stranger and a friend were truly a friend.
7
Upon your promise, cruel one, I would have waited more, / If only of this fleeting life I could have been so sure.
O cruel beloved, I would have waited even longer upon your promise, if only I had any certainty or trust in the span of my own life.
8
This is not a sorrow of the heart that any healer could ever mend; had it vanished even once, a thousand times it would meet its end.
This is not the kind of heartache that anyone could heal; if it were capable of disappearing once, it would have disappeared a thousand times over.
9
You lost all your wits, O ascetic, at the sight of those intoxicating eyes; would they not have overthrown me too, had I not been a drinker of wine?
O ascetic, you lost your senses upon seeing those intoxicating eyes; would they not have completely overthrown me as well, had I not already been a wine drinker?
10
Such reverence would I command that even foes would bow in prayer, / The beloved's threshold would become the Kaaba, were my tomb laid there.
If my grave were at the threshold of the beloved, everyone, even my enemies, would revere me enough to prostrate, and that doorstep would have become the Kaaba.
11
Why shouldn't you take pride, having won the heart of Dagh? Had this treasure not come into your hands, you would have known no such honor.
Why shouldn't you take pride, since you have won the heart of Dagh? If this wealth had not come into your hands, you would not have had this honor.
