1
Do not walk so swollen with haughty pride, stepping beyond yourself; this world is a fleeting thoroughfare—tread with watchful care.
Do not step beyond your limits out of excessive pride; this world is merely a transient path where departure is certain, so walk with care.
2
Look to your vessel, shallow soul so full of haughty pride; Boil not like sorrow's surge, nor walk so swollen in your stride.
O arrogant and shallow person, first look at your own small capacity; do not boil over and walk with such excessive pride like the surge of grief.
3
Respite with this burning heart lasts but a single cry; like wild rue tossed upon the coals, leap not so wildly high.
Here, with this burning of the heart, life's respite lasts only as long as a single cry; even then, do not leap about restlessly like wild rue seeds tossed onto fire.
4
Do not mistake these ghoul-like phantoms for guides upon your way; shun even the shadow of those who practice deceit and betray.
These people are like misleading ghouls, so do not consider them guides; steer clear even of the shadow of deceitful and treacherous people.
5
Pride not yourself on another's might, nor strut with boastful pride; if true strength you possess, then walk alone, with your own strength as your guide.
Do not be arrogant relying on the strength of others, nor act boastful. If you truly possess strength, then walk relying on your own power.
6
He Himself fashioned man as a wind-up puppet, / And He Himself commands the clockwork doll to walk.
God Himself made man like a mechanical puppet, and then He Himself commands this machine-made puppet to walk.
7
Yet eyes were given too, that you might watch your step; who tells you not to walk? Walk on, but walk with care.
You have been given eyes so that you watch your step; who is asking you not to walk? Walk by all means, but walk with care.
8
A wondrous sanctuary of peace is the hidden realm of non-being; slip away from before the gaze of men, and pass beyond their sight.
The hidden realm of non-existence is a remarkably peaceful sanctuary, so slip away and remove yourself from before the eyes of people.
9
What trick of yours could work on me, when I know you through and through? Though you, cruel one, a hundred thousand times should change your artful stride.
No trick of yours can ever work on us because we recognize you well; O cruel one, you may change your ways or gait a hundred thousand times.
10
The candle stands upon its head when warmed by love's desire; The moth commands its eager heart: step forth and burn in fire.
If the candle stands on its head when heated by love, the moth tells its heart to march ahead and burn.
11
Scatter the nightingale's senses just as the rose's fragrance takes flight; rub on a touch of sweet perfume, and stroll with me through the garden bright.
Scatter the nightingale's senses just like the fragrance of a rose; apply a little perfume and stroll with me through the garden.
12
If towards my heart lies your intent, O beloved's glance, fly a few arrows ahead of the courier of Death.
O beloved's glance, if your intention is aimed at my heart, then strike a few arrows ahead of the messenger of death.
13
