Ghazal
This ghazal portrays the profound sorrow and regret of unrequited love, where the lover sacrifices everything for a beloved who never reciprocates. It captures the sheer devastation and madness of passion that ultimately leaves the poet's existence utterly torn apart.

For your sake, I surrendered even my weeping heart; you never became my beloved, and I lost a friend as well.
For your sake I abandoned even my sorrowful heart, yet you never became my beloved and I lost a friend as well.

How could the darner ever mend the collar of my robe? O hand of frenzy, you have left not even a single thread!
How can the tailor ever mend my torn collar, when the hand of madness has not left behind even a single thread to sew?

Having surrendered faith, the lover was useless even to heresy; along with the rosary, he cast away the sacred thread as well.
Having given up his religion, the lover became useless even to infidelity; along with the rosary, he abandoned the sacred thread as well.

Ever since my heart made its home in the corner of your dark, intoxicated eyes, it has forsaken even the vintner's tavern.
Ever since my heart made its abode in the corner of your dark, intoxicated eyes, it has completely abandoned even the tavern of the wine-seller.

There is this solace for the poor: that death, having struck down the pauper, spared not the wealthy either.
The poor find solace in the fact that when death killed the penniless, it did not spare the wealthy either.

Be not contrary with me, keep your sincerity straight and true; if love is what makes you hold back, then see, I renounce love too.
Do not act crookedly with us and keep your sincerity straightforward. If it is love that makes you hold back, then behold, we give up on love as well.
7
How would she ever free the captives of love, she who did not release even a single caged bird in charity?
How could that beloved ever release those imprisoned by love, who did not even free a single captive bird as an act of charity?
8
How could the news of my disgrace have reached her after all, / When that playful beloved had even stopped reading the news?
How could the news of my disgrace have reached that playful beloved, given that she had even stopped reading the newspaper?
9
The one who once made false promises of coming near,
Has now, O Zafar, long abandoned even that pledge dear.
The person who once used to make at least false promises of coming here has now, O Zafar, stopped making even those promises for a long time.
