O ancient sky, as the heart calls to mind someone once known, before my very eyes drifts the portrait of that someone.
O ancient sky, now that someone has been recalled by the heart, their portrait floats right before my eyes.

There is weeping, there is wailing, and sighs and cries of pain; yet upon that cruel heart, all influence proved in vain.
There is weeping, wailing, sighs, and cries of distress, yet none of these had any effect on their heart.
3
How could the dust beneath your feet ever come to one's hand, unless an elixir has been written into one's destiny?
How can the dust beneath your feet ever come into one's hands, unless an elixir is written in someone's destiny?
4
O friends, the beloved is enraged, spin no clever tales; against such wrath, no one's pleading speech avails.
Friends, the beloved is angry, so do not make excuses or spin tales; no one's speech or pleading is going to work right now.
5
Be not proud, O man of wealth, where your palace stands today; for here upon this very ground, another's mansion once lay.
O wealthy person, do not boast of your palace, for someone else's construction must have stood on this very ground before as well.
6
The knot of my heart has never opened, nor shall it ever untie, until the knot-entangling tresses of a certain one are undone.
The knot of my heart has neither opened nor will it ever open, until the entangled curls of someone are untied.
7
Even if he comes, he turns on his heel and retreats; when fate is overturned, such is the misfortune one meets.
When someone's fortune is reversed, even if someone comes, they turn right back around and leave.
8
Sharper than those arched brows and lashes, O Zafar, / Neither is anyone's dagger, nor anyone's sword.
O Zafar, neither anyone's dagger nor anyone's sword is sharper than the beloved's eyebrows and eyelashes.
9
Should the gaze stray from the heart, the heart is held captive; one commits the crime, yet another bears the blame.
If the gaze strays in that direction, it is the heart that gets captured; the real culprit is someone (the eyes), yet the blame and punishment fall upon another (the heart).
