Ghazal
आगे बढ़े न क़िस्सा-ए-इश्क़-ए-बुताँ से हम
This ghazal reflects the poet's lingering entanglement with earthly love and the reluctance to reveal inner truths even to close confidants. Haunted by the vulnerabilities of the heart and the cruelty of fate, the speaker expresses a melancholic retreat from the very shadow of love.

आगे बढ़े न क़िस्सा-ए-इश्क़-ए-बुताँ से हम
सब कुछ कहा मगर न खुले राज़दाँ से हम
Beyond the tale of loving idols, we could never advance; though we spoke of all, we never bared our secret to any confidant.
We could never move beyond the story of loving earthly beauties; though we spoke of everything, we never truly revealed our heart's secret to any confidant.

अब भागते हैं साया-ए-इश्क़-ए-बुताँ से हम
कुछ दिल से हैं डरे हुए कुछ आसमाँ से हम
Now we run even from the shadow of the love of idols: partly terrified of our own heart, partly of the skies.
Now we flee even from the shadow of loving beauties; partly terrified of our own heart, and partly fearful of fate.

हँसते हैं उस के गिर्या-ए-बे-इख़्तियार पर
भूले हैं बात कह के कोई राज़दाँ से हम
We laugh at their weeping, so helpless and wild, / Forgetting the secret we once told our confidant.
We laugh at their uncontrollable weeping, forgetting that we too have shared a secret with a confidant.

अब शौक़ से बिगड़ के ही बातें किया करो
कुछ पा गए हैं आप के तर्ज़-ए-बयाँ से हम
Speak now in anger as freely as you please / For we have gleaned a secret from your very way of speech.
Now you may freely talk to us in anger or irritation, as we have grasped something meaningful from your manner of speaking.

जन्नत में तो नहीं अगर ये ज़ख़्म-ए-तेग़-ए-इश्क़
बदलेंगे तुझ को ज़िंदगी-ए-जावेदाँ से हम
If you are not to be found in Paradise, O wound of love's sharp blade, / We shall gladly barter away eternal life to keep you.
O wound from the sword of love, if you are not present in Paradise, we will exchange eternal life to keep you.
