What water does the healer give us, already quenched and cold—
It is the heart itself that's weary of this life, its embers gone.
What cold, lifeless water does the physician offer us; it is truly our heart itself that has been extinguished by this life.

That which they called the blazing sun of Judgment Day—
it turned out but the lamp of my heart's scar, burnt out and gone.
That which people called the sun of Doomsday turned out to be nothing but the extinguished lamp of my heart's scar.
3
From those wrathful eyes, one half-glance cast my way—
it is, as it were, a bud dipped and steeped in poison.
A half-glance thrown my way from those angry eyes is, as it were, a flower-bud that has been dipped and steeped in poison.
4
Again the cold sigh flared aflame within my heart—
behold, this extinguished wick has blazed up once more.
Once again a cold sigh, kindling flames, arose in my heart; behold, this extinguished wick has flared up anew.
5
First he would take aim at me with his gun,
but in my fate was written only a broken, spent flint.
First he would aim his gun at me, but in my fate there was only a broken, extinguished flint.
6
Though the burnt-out heart may quench itself by burning away,
yet it shall blaze again, like a coal once put out.
Even if this burnt heart is extinguished after burning, it will catch fire once more, just like a coal that had been put out.
7
We ourselves burned out and were quenched, yet, as for this heart's fire,
O Zauq, the moment I found it within my breast, it lay already extinguished.
We ourselves burned and were extinguished, yet, O Zauq, when I found this heart's fire within my breast, it was already put out.
