ऐ सबा कह बहार की बातें
इस बुत-ए-गुल-एज़ार की बातें
O gentle morning breeze, tell tales of the spring, / And whispers of that rose-cheeked idol bring.
O morning breeze, speak of the spring season and tell tales of that rose-cheeked beloved.

किस पे छोड़े निगाह का शहबाज़
क्या करे है शिकार की बातें
Upon whom would he loose the falcon of his glance? / Why does he boast so idly of the hunt?
Upon whom will he release the falcon of his glance, and why does he keep talking of hunting?

मेहरबानी सीं या हों ग़ुस्से सीं
प्यारी लगती हैं यार की बातें
Be they spoken in kindness or in anger's heat, the words of the beloved are forever sweet.
Whether spoken out of kindness or in anger, the words of the beloved always feel sweet and endearing.

छोड़ते कब हैं नक़्द-ए-दिल कूँ सनम
जब ये करते हैं प्यार की बातें
When do these idols ever spare the heart's ready coin / Whenever they begin to speak sweet words of love?
Whenever the beloveds speak sweet words of love, they never spare the heart's wealth and take it away.

पूछिए कुछ कहें हैं कुछ 'नाजी'
आ पड़ीं रोज़गार की बातें
Ask him of one thing, he speaks of quite another, O Naji; alas, the burdensome cares of livelihood have intervened.
If you ask him about one thing, he replies with something completely different, O Naji, because the worries of daily livelihood have intervened.
