Ghazal

Rabindranath Tagore· Ghazal· 3 shers

This ghazal expresses the profound and mystical connection a speaker feels towards a distant, unknown woman, referred to as a 'foreigner' or 'stranger'. Despite her living across the sea, her presence is constantly felt in daily life. Her bangles chime in the speaker's thoughts, and she appears vividly in dreams, indicating an intense spiritual or emotional bond.

1
I know you, O foreign woman. You live across the sea, O foreign woman.
2
As bangles jingle on your hands, I see you engaged in tasks. You arise in my mind in the pauses between all your work.
3
When I am alone in the night, I hear the sound of your footsteps. In my sleep, I see you in my dreams.
