क्या बराबर का मोहब्बत में असर होता है

क्या बराबर का मोहब्बत में असर होता है
दिल इधर होता है ज़ालिम न उधर होता है
Does love ever hold an equal sway on either side? O cruel one, the heart settles neither here nor there.
Does love ever have an equal impact on both sides? O cruel one, the heart is left restless, belonging neither here nor there.

हम ने क्या कुछ न किया दीदा-ए-दिल की ख़ातिर
लोग कहते हैं दुआओं में असर होता है
What did we leave undone for the sake of the heart's yearning eye? / And yet people say that prayers hold sway.
We did everything possible and prayed earnestly for the sake of the heart's yearning, yet people still claim that prayers have an effect.

दिल तो यूँ दिल से मिलाया कि न रक्खा मेरा
अब नज़र के लिए क्या हुक्म-ए-नज़र होता है
You joined heart to heart in such a way that mine was spared no more; now let us see what decree is pronounced upon the gaze.
You joined heart to heart in such a way that you left me no heart of my own; now let us see what decree is issued regarding the gaze.

मैं गुनहगार-ए-जुनूँ मैं ने ये माना लेकिन
कुछ उधर से भी तक़ाज़ा-ए-नज़र होता है
I confess I am guilty of passion's madness, yet from that side too comes the demand of a beckoning glance.
I admit that I am guilty of the madness of love, but there is also some invitation and demand of glances from the beloved's side as well.

कौन देखे उसे बेताब-ए-मोहब्बत ऐ दिल
तू वो नाले ही न कर जिन में असर होता है
Who could bear to see them restless with love, O heart? / Utter no such laments as carry the power to move.
O heart, who could bear to see the beloved restless in love? Therefore, do not make those laments that carry the power to affect them.
