A slave to your love, O idol, I found each and every soul;
Bowed equally in homage—the neck of king and beggar both, I found them bent.
O idol, I found everyone to be a slave of your love; I found the necks of both the king and the beggar equally bowed.

Whoever, like a candle, burned his heart in longing for You,
he found the goal of all desire beneath his very feet.
Whoever burned his heart like a candle in longing for You, found the desired destination lying beneath his feet.

Lovers forever worship at the arch of the beloved's brow;
this selfsame curve I found in temple's niche and Kaaba's vault somehow.
Lovers forever worship the arch of the beloved's eyebrow; I found this very same curve in the niche of the temple and the vault of the Kaaba too.

May the star of my destiny stay the target of accusation's arrow; / Whenever I bear a scar of blame, the sky thinks I have gained a coin.
May the star of my fortune remain the target of accusation's arrow; whenever I bear a scar of blame, the sky imagines I have earned a coin.
5
A thousand longings shall depart the world along with me,
For briefer than the spark and lightning's flash I found life's span to be.
A thousand unfulfilled desires will leave this world along with me; I found the span of existence to be even shorter than a spark or a flash of lightning.
6
Nothing but sorrow is to be gained in this ruin of a world;
Count it a blessing if for a breath you found some ease.
In this ruined world nothing is gained except sorrow; so if you find even a moment's ease, consider it a blessing.
7
The spectacle of the world appeared to me the moment I closed my eyes;
From the pure mirror of the heart, within my breast, I found the cup of Jamshid.
When I closed my eyes, the spectacle of the whole world appeared before me; from the purity of my heart, within my own breast, I found the cup of Jamshid.

Beauty's wondrous craft has both burned me and slain—
at times the lightning of its wrath, at times the cloud of grace I found.
Beauty's ever-changing craft both burned me and killed me; at times I found it as the lightning of wrath, at other times as the cloud of kindness.
9
The work of union's dawn ends surely in the pain of parting's night;
I wept so much when I found soul and body yearning for each other's sight.
The beginning of union surely ends in separation; I wept bitterly when I found my soul and body yearning for each other.
10
In every glint of steel I read the footprints of the departed ones;
The edge of the slayer's sword I found to be the road to nothingness.
In every glinting mark upon the steel he saw the footprints of those who have passed away; he found the edge of the killer's sword to be the pathway leading to annihilation.
11
The Kaaba of my longing is the arching niche of your brow;
In your dark eye I found the sacred gazelle of the holy shrine.
The Kaaba of my purpose and desire is the arched niche of your eyebrow; and I found your dark eye to be the gazelle of the holy sanctuary.
12
Never could the fire's hand prepare the means for passion's letter;
The ink itself grew scarce, if ever we laid hold upon the pen.
The hand of Aatish could never gather the means to write the letter of longing; whenever we took up the pen, the very ink became scarce.
