The one sick with love escaped from sorrow and from toil at last,
The poor soul, hiding his face, slipped away even from the shroud's hold.
The one sick with love finally escaped from sorrow and hardship, and the poor soul, hiding his face, slipped away even from the shroud.

The fire of roses burned to death the garden's birds,
The fowler, wringing his hands in grief, walked out of the garden.
The fire of the roses burned the garden's birds to death, and the fowler, wringing his hands in regret, left the garden.

The messenger of my gaze, with the fountain of life within his mouth—
if he but escapes, unharmed, from the pit of that dimpled chin.
The messenger of my gaze dwells in his mouth, where the fountain of eternal life resides; if only it could escape safely from the pit of that dimpled chin.

When the fragrance of oblivion beheld this poor wretch of mine,
It fled—for ages it had longed to leave its native land behind.
When the fragrance of oblivion saw this poor wretch, it fled away; for a long time it had wished to leave its native land.

The whole world once was subject to the magic of my speech—
has the mightiest name of God slipped loose from my own mouth?
The whole world was once obedient to my speech—has the Greatest Name of God slipped out from my mouth?
6
The frenzy of my passion spared no measure in its bleedings;
pounds of blood have poured and drained out from my body.
The frenzy of passion left no shortfall in its bleedings; pounds of blood drained out from my body.
7
In hope of becoming the pendant for your ear,
how many an agate has emerged from the mine of the earth
In the hope of becoming the pendant for your ear, so many an agate has come forth out of the mine.
8
No more that clamor of chains rings out in the prison cell, O Majnun—
The madman has broken free from the dungeon of the body and gone.
That clamor of chains no longer sounds in the prison, O Majnun; the madman has escaped from the dungeon of the body and is gone.
9
Hearing the splendour of your rank, bewildered was each gazelle—
Maddened, it fled away and left the wilds of Khotan behind.
Hearing of the loftiness of your rank, every gazelle was struck with wonder and, driven mad, fled away out of the wilderness of Khotan.
10
Trust not again the pretext of that cunning, excuse-seeking child—
For Atish, this time, has slipped away through his artful guile.
Do not again believe the excuse of that cunning, pretext-seeking child, for this time Atish has escaped through his clever trick.
