1
O madness, you made ready the march to the desert of non-being—
the robe of my body I rent, torn from collar down to hem.
O madness, you have prepared for the journey to the desert of non-existence; I have torn the garment of my body from the collar all the way down to the hem.
2
Hide not your face now from the maids who dress you, O sun-faced one;
like the revolving sky, for years you've kept me whirling, lost and undone.
O sun-faced one, do not hide your face now from the maids who adorn you; like the revolving sky, you have kept me wandering and bewildered for years.
3
A thousand longings died within the parting from your side;
Love the plunderer has turned my heart into a graveyard wide.
In the sorrow of being separated from you, thousands of desires and longings perished. This destructive, plundering love has turned my heart into a graveyard.
4
The soul-rending lament turned even stone to flowing water;
The restless heart set bird and fish alike to weeping.
The soul-piercing lament melted even stone into water; the restless heart made birds and fish alike break into tears.
5
Bathe me swiftly in my own blood, O beloved's sword,
for years the skirt of my heart has been stained with the soil of sin.
O sword of the beloved, bathe me quickly in my own blood, for over the years the skirt of my heart has been stained with the filth of sin.
6
From dusk till dawn, without you, not a wink of sleep did come—
My laments set the night ablaze, my tears raised up a flood.
From evening until morning, without you not a moment of sleep came to me; my laments kindled a fire and my tears stirred up a storm.
7
O heavens, I became neither beholden to your kindness nor your own—
I thank my God that He has left me destitute, with naught to call my own.
O sky, I became neither indebted to your favour nor your own; I am thankful to my God that He rendered me destitute, with nothing to my name.
8
Can he be called a man who knows not how to value speech?
For it was speech that raised a fistful of dust above the beasts to man.
How can he be called a human who does not value speech, for it was the power of speech that raised a mere fistful of dust from the level of beasts to that of man.
9
The fire of this broken heart, O my God, was nothing at all—
Yet a worthless drop You turned into a boundless, shoreless sea.
O God, the fire of my broken heart was nothing at all; yet You turned a worthless drop into a boundless, shoreless sea.
